These are the statutes and ordinances you must be careful to keep in the land the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess—all the days you live on the earth.

Destroy completely every place where the nations you are dispossessing served their gods—on the high mountains, on the hills, and under every green tree.

Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, burn their Asherah poles in the fire, cut down the carved images of their gods, and wipe out their name from that place.

You must not worship the LORD your God in their way.

Instead, seek the place the LORD your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his name and make his dwelling there. To that place you shall come,

and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and the contributions from your hand, your vow offerings and freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.

There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your households shall eat and rejoice in everything you have undertaken, because the LORD your God has blessed you.

You must not act as we are acting here today, each one doing whatever seems right in his own eyes,

for you have not yet come to the resting place and the inheritance the LORD your God is giving you.

But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest from all your enemies around you, so that you live in safety.

Then to the place the LORD your God chooses as a dwelling for his name you shall bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and the contributions from your hand, and all the choice offerings you have vowed to the LORD.

And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levite within your gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you.

Take care that you do not offer your burnt offerings just anywhere you please.

Offer them only at the place the LORD will choose in one of your tribes; there you shall do everything I command you.

Yet whenever you desire, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your towns, according to the blessing the LORD your God has given you. The unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as they would gazelle or deer.

Only you must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.

You may not eat within your towns the tithe of your grain, new wine, or oil, or the firstborn of your herds and flocks, or any of your vow offerings, freewill offerings, or the contributions from your hand.

Instead, you shall eat them in the presence of the LORD your God at the place the LORD your God chooses—you, your son and daughter, your male and female servants, and the Levite within your gates—and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God in everything you undertake.

Take care that you do not neglect the Levite as long as you live in your land.

When the LORD your God enlarges your territory as he promised you, and you say, "I want to eat meat," because you crave it, you may eat as much meat as you desire.

If the place the LORD your God chooses to put his name is too far from you, then you may slaughter any of the herd or flock the LORD has given you, as I have commanded you, and eat within your towns as much as you desire.

Eat it as you would gazelle or deer; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it.

Only be firm in this: do not eat the blood, for the blood is the life, and you must not eat the life with the meat.

Do not eat it; pour it out on the ground like water.

Do not eat it, so that it may go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD.

But your holy offerings and your vow offerings you shall take and bring to the place the LORD will choose.

Present your burnt offerings, both the meat and the blood, on the altar of the LORD your God. The blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the LORD your God, but the meat you may eat.

Be careful to obey all these words I command you, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the LORD your God.

When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations you are going in to dispossess, and you drive them out and settle in their land,

take care that you are not ensnared into following them after they have been destroyed before you. Do not inquire about their gods, asking, "How did these nations serve their gods? I will do the same."

You must not worship the LORD your God in that way, for in worshiping their gods they have done every abomination the LORD hates—they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.
