Show Elijah's MiraclesThe prophet who challenged Baal (1 Kings 17-19)

Elijah is one of the most dramatic prophets in the Old Testament. In three chapters, he challenges King Ahab and the worship of Baal, experiences God's care in the wilderness, and meets God on Mount Horeb. These chapters display God's power over nature and idols.

Elijah Proclaims Drought

Elijah from Tishbe said to Ahab: 'As surely as the Lord lives... there will be no dew or rain in these years except by my word.' (17:1)

At the brook Cherith, Elijah was fed by ravers - bread and meat morning and evening. He drank from the brook. (17:2-7)

The Widow of Zarephath

The widow had only a handful of flour and a little oil. But the flour did not run out and the oil did not dry up, according to the word of the Lord through Elijah. (17:8-16)

The Confrontation on Mount Carmel

Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal: 'The god who answers by fire, he is God.' Fire fell from heaven and consumed Elijah's offering. The people fell down: 'The Lord, he is God!' (18:20-40)

The Rain Comes

After three and a half years, Elijah prayed for rain. A cloud as small as a man's hand rose from the sea, and the sky became black with clouds. (18:41-46)

Flight to Horeb

Jezebel threatened Elijah's life. He fled to the wilderness and asked to die. An angel provided him with food, and he traveled forty days to Horeb. (19:1-8)

God Speaks in the Whisper

On Horeb there came a great wind, an earthquake and fire - but the Lord was not in them. Then came a still, small whisper. There God spoke to Elijah. (19:9-18)

Elijah the Tishbite, one of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD lives, the God of Israel in whose presence I stand, there will be neither dew nor rain these coming years except at my word."

Then the word of the LORD came to him:

"Leave this place, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, east of the Jordan.

You shall drink from the wadi, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there."

So he went and did as the LORD had said. He went and settled by the Wadi Cherith, east of the Jordan.

The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the wadi.

But after a while the wadi dried up, for there had been no rain in the land.

Then the word of the LORD came to him:

"Get up and go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. I have commanded a widow there to feed you."

So he got up and went to Zarephath. When he came to the entrance of the town, there was a widow gathering sticks. He called to her and said, "Please bring me a little water in a jar, so I may drink."

As she went to get it, he called after her and said, "Please bring me a piece of bread as well."

But she answered, "As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a couple of sticks now, and I will go in and prepare it for myself and my son, and we will eat it and die."

Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid. Go and do as you have said, but first make me a small loaf from what you have and bring it out to me. Then make something for yourself and your son,

for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not run out, and the jug of oil will not run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the face of the ground.'"

She went and did as Elijah had said, and she and Elijah and her household ate for many days.

The jar of flour did not run out, and the jug of oil did not run dry, just as the LORD had spoken through Elijah.

Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house fell ill. His illness grew so severe that there was no breath left in him.

She said to Elijah, "What have I to do with you, man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to mind and to kill my son?"

He said to her, "Give me your son." He took him from her arms, carried him up to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.

Then he cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, have you brought disaster even on the widow I am staying with, by killing her son?"

He stretched himself out over the boy three times and cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him."

The LORD heard Elijah's voice, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived.

Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. "Look," Elijah said, "your son is alive."

Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth."

The designation "the Tishbite" (הַתִּשְׁבִּי) is debated; it may refer to a place called Tishbe, or it could mean "immigrant" from the root ישׁב. The addition "from the inhabitants of Gilead" places him in the Transjordanian highlands, an area known for its rural character and distance from the central centers of power.

The widow at Zarephath remains nameless, but her role is remarkable. As a Phoenician woman and a widow, she represents one of the most vulnerable groups in ancient society. That JHVH sends his prophet to pagan territory to be supported by a poor widow challenges expectations about where God's care and power reach.

Places

The Kerith Ravine (נַחַל כְּרִית) is located "east of the Jordan" in the Gilead region. The Hebrew word נַחַל denotes a seasonal stream (wadi) that fills during the rainy season but dries up in summer. This geographical fact makes it naturally understandable that the brook dried up (v. 7). Its exact location is unknown, but the area offered hiding places in the many ravines leading down toward the Jordan Valley.

Zarephath (צָרְפַת) was located on Phoenician territory between Tyre and Sidon, about 13 km south of Sidon. Archaeological excavations at Sarafand in Lebanon (the modern name) have revealed a significant settlement with continuous habitation through the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The finds include pottery, loom weights, and remains of metalworking industries. The city was subject to Sidon and thus within the domain of King Ethbaal – Jezebel's father. That Elijah is sent here, to the very heartland of Baal worship, underscores the theological confrontation.

Events and Customs

Drought as divine judgment was a well-known motif throughout the ancient Near East. In Mesopotamia and Canaan, rain was associated with fertility gods, especially Baal as "the one who rides on the clouds" and brings rain. Elijah's proclamation of drought is therefore a direct challenge to Baal's claimed power. The formula "as surely as JHVH lives" (חַי־יְהוָה) is an oath-like declaration that binds the statement to JHVH's own existence.

The ravens' provision (vv. 4-6) has sparked discussion. The Hebrew עֹרְבִים can be read as "ravens" or, with different vowels, as "Arabians" (עֲרָבִים). Most translations retain "ravens," which creates a paradox: unclean birds (Lev 11:15) bring food to the prophet. The meals of "bread and meat morning and evening" may recall God's provision for Israel in the wilderness, although the pattern there was somewhat different.

The raising of the dead boy (vv. 17-24) is the first resurrection account in the Old Testament. Elijah's action of "stretching himself out over" (וַיִּתְמֹדֵד) the child three times is a unique act later repeated by Elisha (2 Kgs 4:34-35). The widow's reaction about "remembering my sin" (v. 18) reflects the common belief that sickness and death were punishment for sin.
