As for you, raise a lament over the princes of Israel.
Say: What a lioness was your mother! Among lions she lay down; among young lions she reared her cubs.
She raised up one of her cubs; he became a young lion. He learned to tear his prey; he devoured men.
The nations heard of him; he was caught in their pit, and they led him with hooks to the land of Egypt.
When she saw that her waiting was in vain, that her hope was lost, she took another of her cubs and made him a young lion.
He prowled among the lions; he became a young lion. He learned to tear his prey; he devoured men.
He broke down their strongholds and laid waste their cities; the land and all who filled it were appalled at the sound of his roaring. [^1] [^1]: The Hebrew text here reads literally 'he knew his widows'; 'broke down their strongholds' follows a slight difference in the consonants supported by ancient versions.
Then the nations closed in on him from the provinces all around. They spread their net over him; he was caught in their pit.
With hooks they put him in a cage and brought him to the king of Babylon. They brought him into strongholds, so that his voice would never again be heard on the mountains of Israel.
Your mother was like a vine in your blood, planted by the water, fruitful and full of branches from the abundant water. [^1] [^1]: 'In your blood' renders an obscure Hebrew phrase; it may mean 'in your vineyard' or 'in your likeness.'
Its branches grew strong, fit for the scepters of rulers. It towered high above the thick foliage, conspicuous in its height and in the mass of its boughs.
But it was uprooted in fury and thrown to the ground; the east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong branches were broken off and withered; fire consumed them.
Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a land of drought and thirst.
Fire went out from the stem of its branches and consumed its fruit, and no strong rod was left in it, no scepter for ruling. This is a lament, and a lament it shall remain.
