Look: the Lord, the LORD of hosts, is about to strip Jerusalem and Judah of every support and supply — every reserve of bread, every reserve of water —
the warrior and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,
the commander of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, the skilled craftsman, and the expert in charms.
I will make boys their officials; mere children will rule over them.
The people will oppress one another, each man his neighbor. The young will bully the old, and the base will insult the honored.
A man will seize his brother in his father's house and say: "You have a cloak — you be our leader; take this heap of ruins under your hand."
But on that day he will protest: "I will not be your healer. In my house there is no bread and no cloak. Do not make me leader of the people."
For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, because their words and their deeds are against the LORD, defying the gaze of his glory.
The look on their faces testifies against them; they flaunt their sin like Sodom, they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster on themselves.
Tell the righteous it will go well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them, for what their hands have done will be done to them.
My people — children oppress them, and women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they have swallowed up the path you should walk.
The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the peoples.
The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and officials of his people: "It is you who have devoured the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?" declares the Lord, the LORD of hosts.
The LORD says: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, walking with outstretched necks and flirting eyes, mincing along with tinkling steps and ornaments jingling at their feet —
the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the daughters of Zion; the LORD will lay bare their scalps.* *Footnote: Or "will expose their nakedness"; the meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain.
On that day the Lord will strip away their finery: the anklets and headbands and crescent necklaces,
the pendants, the bracelets, and the veils,
the headdresses, the ankle chains, the sashes, the perfume bottles, and the amulets,
the signet rings and the nose rings,
the fine robes, the capes, the cloaks, and the purses,
the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the shawls.
Instead of perfume there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-set hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.* *Footnote: The Hebrew line breaks off after "instead of beauty"; the final word ("branding" or "shame") is supplied for sense.
Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; stripped bare, she will sit on the ground.
