35That day, when evening came, he said to them, "Let's cross over to the other side."

36So they left the crowd behind and took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats went along with him.

37A fierce squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was already being swamped.

38Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him and said, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?"

39He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Quiet! Be still!" The wind died down, and there was a great calm.

40He said to them, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"

41They were terrified and said to one another, "Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!"

1They came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.

2As soon as Jesus stepped out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs to meet him.

3He lived among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, not even with a chain.

4He had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he tore the chains apart and smashed the shackles to pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him.

5Night and day, without ceasing, he was among the tombs and in the hills, screaming and cutting himself with stones.

6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell down before him,

7crying out at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you by God, do not torment me!"

8For Jesus had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"

9Then he asked him, "What is your name?" He answered, "My name is Legion, for we are many."

10And he begged him urgently not to send them out of the region.

11A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,

12and the spirits begged him, "Send us into the pigs. Let us enter them."

13He gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd—about two thousand of them—rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.

14The herdsmen fled and spread the news in the town and in the countryside, and the people came out to see what had happened.

15They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion sitting there, dressed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.

16Those who had seen it told them what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the pigs as well.

17Then they began to beg Jesus to leave their district.

18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to stay with him.

19But Jesus would not allow it. "Go home to your own people," he said, "and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."

20So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.

21When Jesus had crossed back in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the sea.

22One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus he fell at his feet

23and pleaded with him urgently: "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live."

24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed in around him.

25Among them was a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.

26She had endured much under many physicians and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she had only grown worse.

27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,

28for she said to herself, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."

29Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was cured of her affliction.

30At once Jesus, aware within himself that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"

31His disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing in on you, and you ask, 'Who touched me?'"

32But he kept looking around to see who had done it.

33Then the woman, afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.

34He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be free from your affliction."

35While he was still speaking, messengers came from the house of the synagogue leader and said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?"

36But Jesus, overhearing what was said, told the synagogue leader, "Do not be afraid; only believe."

37He let no one go with him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

38They came to the house of the synagogue leader, and Jesus saw the commotion—people weeping and wailing loudly.

39He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep."

40They laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was.

41Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum!"—which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!"

42Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And they were utterly astonished.

43He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and he told them to give her something to eat.

1Again he began to teach beside the sea. Such a huge crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the water, while the whole crowd was on the shore at the water's edge.

2He taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:

3"Listen! A sower went out to sow.

4And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

5Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once, because the soil was shallow,

6but when the sun rose it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away.

7Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, so it produced no crop.

8And other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew, and produced a crop—thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was sown."

9And he said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."

10When he was alone, those around him, along with the Twelve, asked him about the parables.

11He told them, "To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to those outside everything comes in parables,

12so that they may look and look, yet never see, and hear and hear, yet never understand; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven."

13Then he said to them, "Don't you understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of them?

14The sower sows the word.

15Some people are like the seed along the path, where the word is sown: as soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.

16Others are like the seed sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they receive it at once with joy,

17but they have no root in themselves and last only a little while. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they immediately fall away.

18Others are like the seed sown among thorns. These are the ones who hear the word,

19but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the craving for other things come in and choke the word, and it produces nothing.

20But those sown on good soil are the ones who hear the word, welcome it, and bear fruit—thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was sown."
