23When he came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and asked, "By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?"

24Jesus answered them, "I will ask you one question too, and if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

25Where did John's baptism come from? From heaven or from men?" They discussed it among themselves: "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'

26But if we say, 'From men,' we are afraid of the crowd, since they all regard John as a prophet."

27So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." And he said to them, "Then neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

27They came again to Jerusalem, and as Jesus was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him.

28"By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you the authority to do this?"

30John's baptism—was it from heaven or from men? Answer me."

17So tell us what you think: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

18But Jesus knew their malice and said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?

19Show me the coin used for the tax." They brought him a denarius,

20and he asked them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?"

21"Caesar's," they said. Then he told them, "So give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God."

22When they heard this, they were amazed; they left him and went away.

13Then they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to him to trap him in his words.

14They came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you court no one's favor, for you show no partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or not?"

15But he saw through their hypocrisy and said to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."

16They brought one, and he asked them, "Whose image is this, and whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they answered.

17Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God." And they were utterly amazed at him.

23But he saw through their cunning and said to them,

33"Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away on a journey.

34When harvest time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.

35But the tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned another.

36Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they treated them the same way.

37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.'

39So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

40Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?"

41They said to him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and he will lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruit at the proper seasons."

42Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?

43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

44Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and anyone it falls on will be crushed."

45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew he was speaking about them.

46They wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowds, because the people regarded him as a prophet.

1Then he began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a pit for the winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away on a journey.

2When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.

3But they seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.

4Again he sent them another servant, and that one they struck on the head and treated shamefully.

5He sent another, and that one they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, others they killed.

6He still had one left, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

7But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

8So they seized him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

9What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

10Have you never read this Scripture: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;

11this came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"

12They were looking for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd, for they knew he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.

17But he looked straight at them and said, "Then what does this mean that is written: 'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone'?

18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and anyone on whom it falls will be crushed."

Some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to him and asked,
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies leaving a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife and died childless.
and the third took her, and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.
Finally the woman died as well.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife."
Jesus said to them, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.
But those considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
They can no longer die, for they are like the angels; and they are children of God, since they are children of the resurrection.
But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, where he calls the Lord 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'
He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive."
Some of the scribes responded, "Teacher, you have spoken well."
For they no longer dared to ask him anything.
Then he said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is David's son?
For David himself says in the book of Psalms: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'
David calls him Lord; how then can he be his son?"
While all the people were listening, he said to his disciples,
"Beware of the scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, and they love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.
They devour widows' houses and for show make lengthy prayers. These will receive a greater condemnation."
