The Centurion's ServantMLJ

5When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him

6and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible torment."

7Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him."

8But the centurion answered, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

9For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it."

10When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those who were following him, "Truly I tell you, I have found no one in Israel with such faith.

11I tell you, many will come from east and west and take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,

12while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the deepest darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

13Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go. Let it be done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed that very hour.

1When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.

2A centurion there had a servant whom he valued highly, and the man was sick and about to die.

3When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and save his servant's life.

4They came to Jesus and pleaded with him earnestly: "He deserves to have you do this for him,

5for he loves our nation, and he himself built our synagogue."

6So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.

7That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.

8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

9When Jesus heard this, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him he said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith."

10And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

46So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Now there was a royal official whose son lay ill in Capernaum.

47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to come down and heal his son, who was at the point of death.

48Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe."

49The official said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."

50Jesus said to him, "Go; your son lives." The man believed the word Jesus spoke to him and started on his way.

51While he was still on the way down, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.

52So he asked them the hour when the boy had begun to improve, and they told him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him."

53Then the father realized that this was the very hour when Jesus had said to him, "Your son lives." And he himself believed, along with his whole household.

54This was the second sign Jesus performed, once again, after coming from Judea to Galilee.

When Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John—
though in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples—
he left Judea and went back to Galilee.
He had to pass through Samaria.
So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
Jacob's well was there. Jesus, worn out from the journey, sat down just as he was beside the well. It was about noon.
A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."
His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."
The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where do you get this living water?
Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, with his sons and his livestock?"
Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
but whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst again. The water I give will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."
He said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back here."
"I have no husband," the woman answered. Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying you have no husband.
You have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true."
"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming—he who is called Christ. When he comes, he will tell us everything."
Jesus said to her, "I am he—I who am speaking to you."
Just then his disciples came back, and they were astonished that he was speaking with a woman. Yet no one said, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
So the woman left her water jar, went back to the town, and said to the people,
"Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
They left the town and started toward him.
Meanwhile the disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something."
But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."
So the disciples said to one another, "Could someone have brought him something to eat?"
Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
Do you not say, 'Four months more, and then the harvest'? Look, I tell you: lift up your eyes and see the fields—they are already white for harvest!
the reaper is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.
For here the saying holds true: 'One sows and another reaps.'
I sent you to reap what you have not labored for. Others have done the hard work, and you have entered into their labor."
Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony: "He told me everything I ever did."
So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.
And many more believed because of his word.
They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world."
After the two days he left there for Galilee,
for Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.
When he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, for they had seen everything he had done in Jerusalem at the festival; they too had gone to the festival.
So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Now there was a royal official whose son lay ill in Capernaum.
