Jesus sends letters to seven churches in Asia Minor. Each letter contains praise, criticism (except for Smyrna and Philadelphia), and a promise to the one who overcomes.

Ephesus

Has left their first love, but hates the deeds of the Nicolaitans.

Praise: perseverance. Criticism: lost their love

Smyrna

Poor, yet rich. Will be persecuted for ten days. No criticism.

Praise: faithful in tribulation. Criticism: none

Pergamum

Holds fast to Jesus' name, but has some who hold to the teaching of Balaam.

Praise: faithfulness. Criticism: tolerates false teaching

Thyatira

Love and faith, but tolerates "Jezebel" who leads people into immorality.

Praise: growth. Criticism: tolerates a false prophetess

To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands:

I know your works, your labor and your endurance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and have found them false.

You have endured; you have borne up for the sake of my name and have not grown weary.

But I have this against you: you have abandoned the love you had at first.

Remember, then, how far you have fallen. Repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

Yet this you have in your favor: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which stands in the paradise of God.

And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of the First and the Last, who was dead and came to life:

I know your affliction and your poverty—yet you are rich—and the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to be tested, and you will suffer affliction for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will never be harmed by the second death.

And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword:

I know where you live—where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast to my name, and you did not deny your faith in me even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan lives.

But I have a few things against you: you have there some who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the people of Israel, so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.

So you too have some among you who hold in the same way to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

So repent. If not, I will come to you soon and wage war against them with the sword of my mouth.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze:

I know your works—your love and faith, your service and endurance—and that your latest works are greater than your first.

But I have this against you: you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. She teaches and misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.

I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to turn from her immorality.

Look, I am throwing her onto a bed of suffering, and those who commit adultery with her into terrible affliction, unless they repent of her works.

I will strike her children dead, and all the churches will know that I am the one who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your works.

But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching and have not learned what they call the deep things of Satan, I say: I lay on you no other burden.

Only hold fast to what you have until I come.

To the one who conquers and keeps my works to the end, I will give authority over the nations—

he will rule them with an iron rod and shatter them like clay pots—

just as I myself have received authority from my Father. And I will give him the morning star.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Places

Ephesus (vv. 1–7) was the largest city in the Roman province of Asia, with an estimated population of 200,000–250,000. The city was known for its famous Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and served as a major religious and commercial center. Paul had been instrumental in establishing the church there and ministered in the city for about three years (Acts 19). The city also had a significant Jewish community and was a center for emperor worship.

Smyrna (vv. 8–11) was located about 55 km north of Ephesus and was a prosperous port city known for its loyalty to Rome. The city earned the honor of building a temple for emperor worship as early as 26 AD. The Jewish community in Smyrna was known for its hostility toward Christians, as confirmed by later sources such as the martyrdom account of Polycarp (c. 156 AD).

Pergamum (vv. 12–17) was the capital of the province of Asia and a religious center with impressive temples dedicated to Zeus, Athena, Dionysus, and Asclepius (the god of healing). The city had the first temple for emperor worship in Asia (29 BC), dedicated to Augustus and Rome. The expression "Satan’s throne" (v. 13) may refer to the massive altar of Zeus on the acropolis, the cult of Asclepius (whose symbol was the serpent), or emperor worship.

Thyatira (vv. 18–29) was the smallest of the seven cities but an important commercial center known for its many guilds (craftsmen associations). Lydia, the purple cloth merchant from Acts 16:14, came from this city. The guilds held regular meals in temples where meat sacrificed to idols was served—this created a real dilemma for Christian craftsmen who depended on guild membership for their livelihood.

People

Antipas (v. 13) is mentioned as "my faithful witness" who was killed in Pergamum. He is the only named martyr in Revelation. Although we have no extra-biblical sources confirming his existence, his death illustrates that persecution during this period could be fatal. Later church traditions claim he was burned inside a bronze bull, but this cannot be verified historically.

"Jezebel" (v. 20) is likely a symbolic name for an actual woman in the church at Thyatira who called herself a prophetess. The name is a deliberate reference to Queen Jezebel in the Old Testament (1 Kings 16–21), who promoted Baal worship in Israel. This woman appears to have taught that Christians could participate in idol-feasts and sexual immorality.

Events and Customs

Guild meals and food sacrificed to idols constituted a central social and economic problem for early Christians. In the cities of Asia Minor, craftsmen were organized into guilds that regularly held communal meals in temples where the food had been offered to gods. Refusing to participate could mean financial ruin and social ostracism. The reference to Balaam (v. 14) and the criticism of Jezebel (v. 20) address precisely this issue: Could Christians eat "food sacrificed to idols" (εἰδωλόθυτα) in order to maintain their place in society?

"The synagogue of Satan" (v. 9) reflects intense conflict between Christians and Jewish communities in Smyrna. Jews who rejected Jesus as the Messiah and possibly accused Christians before Roman authorities are described here with this sharp expression. This must be understood in light of an internal family conflict within Judaism, not as later anti-Jewish rhetoric.

Key Terms

"The Nicolaitans" (Νικολαϊτῶν, vv. 6, 15) were a group that both Ephesus and Pergamum had dealings with. The exact teaching of the group is unknown, but the context associates them with eating food sacrificed to idols and sexual immorality. The name may come from a leader named Nicolas, or it could be a symbolic construction from Greek νικάω (to conquer) and λαός (people)—"those who conquer the people." Irenaeus (c. 180 AD) identified them with Nicolas of Antioch (Acts 6:5), but this is uncertain.

"The white stone" (ψῆφον λευκήν, v. 17) has several possible backgrounds: In legal proceedings, people used white and black stones for acquittal and conviction. White stones also served as tickets to festive meals and as amulets bearing secret names. The promise likely combines several of these associations: acquittal, access to the heavenly meal, and a new, secret name expressing intimate fellowship with Christ.

"The crown of life" (τὸν στέφανον τῆς ζωῆς, v. 10) uses the Greek word στέφανος, which referred to wreaths given to athletic victors and heroes. Smyrna was known for its athletic competitions, and the city’s acropolis was called "the crown of Smyrna" because of its beautiful buildings. The image would thus have had special resonance for members of the church.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Extensive archaeological excavations have shed light on all four cities. In Ephesus, researchers have uncovered the enormous Library of Celsus, the main street known as the Arcadian Way, and remains of the Temple of Artemis. In Pergamum, the massive altar of Zeus (now in Berlin) and the sanctuary of Asclepius ("Asklepieion") are particularly relevant—the latter was a famous healing center where snakes were kept as sacred animals. The ancient ruins of Smyrna lie largely beneath modern Izmir, but the old agora has been partially excavated. In Thyatira (modern Akhisar), inscriptions have been found mentioning many of the city’s guilds, including dyers, bronze workers, bakers, and wool merchants—confirming the picture of a city dominated by craft guilds.
