Grace

Grace is God's unmerited goodness toward sinners. It is the heartbeat of the gospel—that God gives us what we do not deserve: forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life. Grace is free to us, but cost Christ everything.

What Is Grace?

Grace is God's unmerited favor—we receive what we do not deserve.

8For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not from yourselves—it is the gift of God,
9not from works, so that no one may boast.
4But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for humanity appeared,
5he saved us—not because of righteous deeds we had done, but because of his own mercy—through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
6whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
7so that, justified by his grace, we might become heirs in the hope of eternal life.
6And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

The Source of Grace

All grace comes from God through Jesus Christ.

14And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth.
16For out of his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
20The law came in so that the trespass would increase. But where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more,
21so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Grace for Sinners

God's grace reaches the worst sinners and transforms lives.

42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
43And Jesus said to him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."
13me, who was once a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man. Yet I was shown mercy, because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.
14And the grace of our Lord overflowed for me, together with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—and I am the foremost of them.
16But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the foremost of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his perfect patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him and receive eternal life.
8But God proves his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Grace for Everyday Life

God's grace is sufficient for every situation in life.

9But he said to me, "My grace is enough for you, for my power is brought to its fullness in weakness." So I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
16So let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, to receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
10And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore you, support you, strengthen you, and establish you.

Living in Grace

Grace frees us to live for God—not out of duty, but out of love.

14For sin shall not be your master, since you are not under law but under grace.
15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people.
12It trains us to renounce godlessness and worldly desires, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
14For the love of Christ compels us, since we are convinced that one died for all; therefore all died.
15And he died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised.
