Now we want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given to the churches of Macedonia.

In the midst of a severe ordeal of affliction, their overflowing joy and their deep poverty together overflowed in a wealth of generosity.

For they gave according to their means—I can testify to it—and even beyond their means, entirely of their own accord,

begging us earnestly for the favor of sharing in this ministry to the saints.

And they went beyond what we had hoped: they gave themselves first to the Lord and then, by the will of God, to us.

So we urged Titus that, as he had already begun, he should also bring this act of grace to completion among you.

Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this act of grace.

I am not saying this as a command; rather, by pointing to the earnestness of others, I am testing the genuineness of your love.

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

So here is my advice on the matter, for this is best for you: last year you were the first not only to act but also to want to act.

Now finish the work as well, so that your doing may match your eagerness to do—according to what you have.

For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.

The point is not that others should be relieved while you are burdened, but that there should be a fair balance.

At the present time your abundance supplies their need, so that their abundance may in turn supply your need, and so there will be equality,

as it is written: "The one who gathered much had nothing left over, and the one who gathered little had no lack."

But thanks be to God, who put the same devotion for you into the heart of Titus.

For he not only welcomed our appeal; he is so eager that he is going to you of his own accord.

With him we are sending the brother who is praised among all the churches for his work in the gospel.

And not only that, but he has also been chosen by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this gracious work, to the glory of the Lord himself and to show our own eagerness.

We are taking this precaution so that no one can find fault with us in our handling of this generous gift.

For we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of people.

And with them we are sending our brother whom we have tested many times in many matters and found to be diligent, and who is now all the more eager because of his great confidence in you.

As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker on your behalf; as for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.

So show them the proof of your love and of the reason we boast about you, in full view of the churches.

People

The two unnamed brothers (vv. 18, 22) have been the subject of much speculation. One is "well known among all the churches for his work with the gospel" and was "chosen by the churches" (χειροτονηθείς) to accompany them as a traveling companion. Possible candidates that have been suggested include Luke or Trophimus, but the text gives no certain identification. Their remaining anonymous may reflect that the document was intended to be read aloud and the individuals were known to the listeners, or that the focus was deliberately kept on the mission rather than on specific persons.

Places

Macedonia (v. 1) refers to the Roman province that included cities such as Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea. Paul highlights that the congregations there gave generously despite "deep poverty" (κατὰ βάθους πτωχεία). Macedonia was economically weaker than the wealthy trading city of Corinth, which made their willingness to give even more remarkable.

Jerusalem is the implied destination for the collection for "the saints" (τοὺς ἁγίους, v. 4), although the city is not mentioned directly in this chapter.
