Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Let me choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David.

I will come upon him while he is weary and his hands are weak, and I will throw him into panic. All the people with him will flee, and I will strike down the king alone.

Then I will bring all the people back to you. The return of them all depends on the one man you are seeking; then the whole people will be at peace."

The plan seemed right to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.

But Absalom said, "Call Hushai the Archite as well, and let us hear what he has to say too."

When Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, "This is what Ahithophel has proposed. Shall we act on his word? If not, speak up."

Hushai answered Absalom, "This time the advice Ahithophel has given is not good."

Hushai went on, "You know your father and his men: they are warriors, and they are as fierce as a bear in the field robbed of her cubs. Your father is a man of war; he will not spend the night with the troops.

Even now he is hiding in one of the ravines or somewhere else. If some of your men fall at the first attack, whoever hears of it will say, 'There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.'

Then even the bravest man, with a heart like the heart of a lion, will melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those with him are men of valor.

So this is my advice: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, be gathered to you, as numerous as the sand on the seashore, and go yourself into battle at their head.

Then we will come upon him wherever he may be found, and we will settle on him as the dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of the men with him will be left alive—not one.

And if he withdraws into a city, all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down into the valley until not even a pebble of it can be found."

Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than the advice of Ahithophel." For the LORD had ordained that Ahithophel's good counsel be frustrated, so that the LORD might bring disaster on Absalom.

Then Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, "This is the advice Ahithophel gave Absalom and the elders of Israel, and this is what I advised.

Now send word quickly and tell David: 'Do not spend the night in the plains of the wilderness, but cross over at once, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.'"

Jonathan and Ahimaaz were waiting at En-rogel, and a servant girl would go and bring them word, and they would go and report to King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city.

But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them hurried away and came to the house of a man in Bahurim who had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it.

The woman took a covering, spread it over the mouth of the well, and scattered grain on top of it, so that nothing was noticed.

When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman answered, "They have crossed the stream." The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.

After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went and reported to King David. They said to him, "Get up and cross the water quickly, for this is what Ahithophel has advised against you."

So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak not one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.

When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his home in his own town. He put his household in order and hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father's tomb.

David came to Mahanaim, and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.

Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Israelite, who had married Abigail daughter of Nahash, the sister of Zeruiah, Joab's mother.

Israel and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.

When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Machir son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim

brought bedding, bowls, and pottery, along with wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils,

honey, curds, sheep, and cheese from the herd. They set it before David and the people with him to eat, for they said, "The people have grown hungry, weary, and thirsty in the wilderness."

Ahithophel was known as an exceptionally wise counselor, and his advice was regarded as if one had "inquired of God himself" (2 Sam 16:23). His strategic plan for a swift night attack with 12,000 men was militarily superior—it would have exploited David’s vulnerable situation before he could reorganize. Ahithophel’s suicide after his counsel was rejected is the most detailed account of a suicide in the Old Testament. The fact that he "set his house in order" before hanging himself indicates a deliberate, planned act, likely motivated by his foresight of Absalom’s defeat and his own fate as a traitor.

Hushai the Archite came from Erech (Arki), an area probably located near Bethel, north of Jerusalem. His role as "David’s friend" was an official court position, not merely a personal friendship. Hushai mastered the art of appealing to Absalom’s vanity by suggesting that the king himself should lead a massive army—a proposal that flattered him but also gave David critical time.

Amasa was appointed by Absalom as commander of the army in place of Joab. He was the son of Jether (called "an Israelite" in this chapter, but "an Ishmaelite" in 1 Chron 2:17) and Abigail, who was the sister of Zeruiah (Joab’s mother). This made Amasa Joab’s cousin and a relative of David, complicating the lines of loyalty in the conflict.

Places

En-Rogel ("the fuller’s spring") was a spring in the Kidron Valley, just south of where the Kidron and Hinnom valleys meet. The site lay outside Jerusalem’s walls, making it suitable as a secret meeting place for Jonathan and Ahimaaz without their needing to enter the rebel-controlled city. The spring was a natural gathering spot where a servant girl could draw water without arousing suspicion.

Bahurim lay east of Jerusalem on the road toward the Jordan Valley—the same place where Shimei had previously cursed David. The well in the courtyard where the messengers hid was typical of Israelite homes—a cistern hewn out of limestone, often with an opening that could easily be covered.

Mahanaim ("two camps") lay in Gilead, east of the Jordan. The site held symbolic significance as the place where Jacob met angels (Gen 32:2), and it had previously been Ish-bosheth’s capital. Its location gave David a natural defensive position with the Jordan River as a barrier.

The presence of the elders (v. 4) underscores that the rebellion had institutional backing.

Hospitality in crisis is demonstrated at the end of the chapter, where Shobi, Machir, and Barzillai bring supplies to David. The list of gifts—beds, basins, earthenware vessels, wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils, honey, butter, sheep, and cheese from cattle—represents both essential provisions and a declaration of political loyalty. That an Ammonite (Shobi, son of Nahash from Rabbah) helped David shows that David’s political network extended beyond Israel’s borders.

Key Terms

The expression "mar nefesh" (מָרֵי נֶפֶשׁ, "bitter in soul", v. 8) describes David’s men as desperate and dangerous, like a bear robbed of her cubs. This poetic image was immediately understandable in a culture where predator attacks were a real threat to shepherds.

The verb "vajjeḥanaq" (וַיֵּחָנַק, "he hanged himself", v. 23) is used only here in the Old Testament for suicide by strangulation.
