Again there came a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.

The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming the earth and walking back and forth across it."

The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth: a man blameless and upright, who fears God and turns away from evil. He still holds fast to his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without cause."

Satan answered the LORD, "Skin for skin! A man will give up all he has to save his own life.

But just stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely curse you to your face.

The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, he is in your hands, but spare his life."

So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.

And Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself while he sat among the ashes.

His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!"

He answered her, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God and not accept trouble?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

When Job's three friends heard of all the trouble that had come upon him, each of them set out from his own place—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They agreed to go together to show him sympathy and comfort him.

When they looked up from a distance, they could not recognize him. They wept aloud, tore their robes, and tossed dust into the air over their heads.

Then they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw how great his suffering was.

Job’s wife is mentioned for the first time in this chapter, but remains unnamed throughout the book. In the ancient Near East, a woman’s identity was often tied to her husband and children. Her urging of Job to "curse God and die" (v. 9)—where "curse" (בָּרֵךְ, barekh) is a euphemism for "curse"—perhaps reflects desperation over having lost all her children and seeing her husband suffer. Some Jewish traditions give her the name Sitidos or Dina, but this has no biblical basis.

The three friends are introduced: Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuhah, and Zophar from Naamah (צוֹפַר הַנַּעֲמָתִי). Teman was known as a center of wisdom in Edom (Jer 49:7), and Eliphaz thus represents the Edomite wisdom tradition. Shuhah may be linked to a tribe mentioned in Gen 25:2 as descendants of Abraham and Keturah. The location of Naamah is uncertain, but it may lie in northwest Arabia. All three come from areas east or southeast of Israel, which underscores the book’s non-Israelite setting.

Events and Customs

Mourning rituals described in verses 12–13 were widespread in the ancient Near East: tearing one’s clothes, throwing dust on the head toward the sky, and sitting silently on the ground. The seven-day period of silence (later known as shiva in Jewish mourning tradition) has its roots in such ancient customs. Sitting in ashes (v. 8) symbolized deep humility and grief. These rituals are also attested in both Mesopotamian and Canaanite cultures.
