So all the work that Solomon did for the house of the LORD was finished. Then Solomon brought in the gifts his father David had dedicated—the silver, the gold, and all the vessels—and placed them in the treasuries of the house of God.

Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the ancestral houses of the Israelites, at Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the City of David, that is, Zion.

All the men of Israel gathered to the king at the festival in the seventh month.

When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the Levites took up the ark.

They brought up the ark, the tent of meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the tent; the priests and the Levites carried them up.

King Solomon and the whole assembly of Israel gathered with him before the ark sacrificed sheep and cattle too many to be counted or numbered.

The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, the Most Holy Place, beneath the wings of the cherubim.

The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark, so that they overshadowed the ark and its carrying poles from above.

The poles were so long that their ends could be seen extending from the ark in front of the inner sanctuary, though they were not visible from outside. And there they remain to this day.

There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses had placed there at Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites when they came out of Egypt.

Then the priests came out of the Holy Place. All the priests who were present had consecrated themselves, without regard to their divisions,

and all the Levitical singers—Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and their sons and kinsmen—stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, and with them a hundred and twenty priests sounding trumpets.

The trumpeters and singers joined as one, making a single sound of praise and thanksgiving to the LORD. As they lifted up their voices with trumpets, cymbals, and instruments of music, they praised the LORD: "He is good; his mercy endures forever." Then the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud,

and the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God.

Places

City of David (Zion) was the original Jebusite fortress that David conquered and made his capital (2 Sam 5:6-9). It was located on the southeastern hill, south of where the temple was later built. The ark had been kept here in a tent David had pitched for it, for about 30 years before it was now moved the short distance up to the temple platform on Mount Moriah.

The Debir (the Most Holy Place) was the innermost room of the temple, a perfect cube measuring twenty cubits in every direction. The Hebrew word debir (דְּבִיר) can mean "the rear chamber" or possibly "place of speaking" (related to the root דבר, "to speak"). This was God's throne room on earth, where his presence rested between the cherubim above the ark of the covenant.

Events and Customs

The Feast in the Seventh Month refers to the Festival of Tabernacles (Sukkot), which was celebrated from the 15th to the 22nd day of the month Tishri (September-October). This was the greatest of the three pilgrimage festivals and marked the harvest. The choice of this feast for the temple dedication was strategic—the people were already gathered in Jerusalem, and it was a time of joy and thanksgiving.

The Carrying of the Ark followed strict protocols from the Mosaic Law. The Levites carried the ark with poles through rings on its sides, without touching the chest itself. After the incident with Uzzah (1 Chron 13:9-10), care was taken to follow the prescribed rules. Chronicles emphasizes the role of the Levites more than the parallel account in 1 Kings.

These three families formed the core of temple music for generations to come.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Archaeologists have discovered several silver trumpets from antiquity in the Middle East, including examples from Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt. The biblical chatsotsrot (חֲצֹצְרוֹת, silver trumpets) were straight tubes, different from the curved ram's horns (shofar). That 120 priests blew trumpets simultaneously (v. 12) illustrates the enormous scale of this ceremony—a soundscape that must have been overwhelming in the temple courtyard.
