The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah. In the month of Kislev, in the twentieth year, I was in the citadel of Susa.

Hanani, one of my brothers, came with some men from Judah, and I questioned them about the Jews who had survived, those left from the exile, and about Jerusalem.

They told me, "Those who survived the exile and remain in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire."

When I heard these words, I sat down and wept. For days I mourned, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

I said: "LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments,

let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you today, day and night, for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites have committed against you. Both I and my father's house have sinned.

We have acted corruptly toward you and have not kept the commandments, statutes, and ordinances you gave your servant Moses.

Remember, I pray, the word you commanded your servant Moses: 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations;

but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, then even if your exiles are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my name.'

They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great power and your mighty hand.

Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Grant your servant success today, and give him compassion in the presence of this man." I was the king's cupbearer.

People

Nehemiah son of Hacaliah is introduced as the narrator and main character. His position as "cupbearer to the king" (v. 11) was a trusted court role with direct access to the king, responsible for tasting the wine to ensure it was not poisoned. Hanani, described as "one of my brothers" (v. 2), could mean either a biological brother or a relative/fellow countryman from Judah. He arrives with men from Judah and brings news about the situation in Jerusalem.
