Now listen, you who are rich: weep and wail over the misery that is coming upon you.

Your wealth has rotted, and your clothes are moth-eaten.

Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will testify against you and eat away your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days.

Look, the wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying out, and the shouts of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

You have lived in luxury and self-indulgence on the earth; you have fattened your hearts on the day of slaughter.

You have condemned and murdered the righteous one. Does he not oppose you?

So be patient, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.

You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.

Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door.

Brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord as your example of suffering and patience.

See, we call those blessed who endured. You have heard of Job's endurance, and you have seen the outcome the Lord brought about—for the Lord is deeply compassionate and merciful.

Above all, my brothers, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by any other oath. Let your yes be yes and your no be no, so that you do not fall under judgment.

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

And the prayer offered in faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Elijah was a man just like us, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain—and no rain fell on the land for three and a half years.

Then he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its harvest.

My brothers, if any among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back,

know this: whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

People

Job (Ἰώβ) is mentioned in verse 11 as an example of endurance. Job was a central figure in Jewish wisdom tradition, known from the Old Testament book bearing his name. For James’s Jewish-Christian readers, Job was the foremost example of a righteous man who held fast to his faith through extreme suffering. The expression "the Lord's outcome" (τὸ τέλος κυρίου) refers to how God ultimately restored and blessed Job.

Elijah (Ἠλίας) is highlighted in verses 17–18 as an example of the power of prayer. James emphasizes that Elijah was "a human being with a nature like ours" (ὁμοιοπαθὴς ἡμῖν) – an important clarification showing that powerful prayer is not reserved for superhuman heroes. The time reference "three years and six months" also appears in Luke 4:25 and reflects Jewish tradition, since 1 Kings 18:1 mentions only "the third year".
