The Resurrection
The resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith. Jesus' resurrection from the dead confirms his divinity and victory over death. And because he lives, we too shall live - we have a living hope of resurrection and eternal life.
Jesus Is Risen
The testimony that the tomb was empty and Jesus is alive.
5But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν ταῖς γυναιξίν· Μὴ φοβεῖσθε ὑμεῖς, οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι Ἰησοῦν τὸν ἐσταυρωμένον ζητεῖτε·
6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
οὐκ ἔστιν ὧδε, ἠγέρθη γὰρ καθὼς εἶπεν· δεῦτε ἴδετε τὸν τόπον ὅπου ⸀ἔκειτο·
5The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them: "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
ἐμφόβων δὲ γενομένων αὐτῶν καὶ κλινουσῶν ⸂τὰ πρόσωπα⸃ εἰς τὴν γῆν εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτάς· Τί ζητεῖτε τὸν ζῶντα μετὰ τῶν νεκρῶν;
6He is not here; he has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,
⸂οὐκ ἔστιν ὧδε, ἀλλὰ ἠγέρθη.⸃ μνήσθητε ὡς ἐλάλησεν ὑμῖν ἔτι ὢν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ,
7that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and rise again on the third day."
λέγων ⸂τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὅτι δεῖ⸃ παραδοθῆναι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ σταυρωθῆναι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἀναστῆναι.
19That evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples were together behind locked doors for fear of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."
Οὔσης οὖν ὀψίας τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τῇ ⸀μιᾷ σαββάτων, καὶ τῶν θυρῶν κεκλεισμένων ὅπου ἦσαν οἱ ⸀μαθηταὶ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔστη εἰς τὸ μέσον, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Εἰρήνη ὑμῖν.
20After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν ⸀ἔδειξεν τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τὴν πλευρὰν ⸀αὐτοῖς. ἐχάρησαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες τὸν κύριον.
The Meaning of the Resurrection
Without the resurrection, faith is futile - but Christ has risen!
14And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is empty and your faith is empty as well.
εἰ δὲ Χριστὸς οὐκ ἐγήγερται, κενὸν ⸀ἄρα τὸ κήρυγμα ἡμῶν, ⸀κενὴ καὶ ἡ πίστις ⸀ὑμῶν,
17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
εἰ δὲ Χριστὸς οὐκ ἐγήγερται, ματαία ἡ πίστις ⸀ὑμῶν, ἔτι ἐστὲ ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν.
20But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Νυνὶ δὲ Χριστὸς ἐγήγερται ἐκ νεκρῶν, ἀπαρχὴ τῶν ⸀κεκοιμημένων.
21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
ἐπειδὴ γὰρ διʼ ἀνθρώπου ⸀θάνατος, καὶ διʼ ἀνθρώπου ἀνάστασις νεκρῶν·
22For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
ὥσπερ γὰρ ἐν τῷ Ἀδὰμ πάντες ἀποθνῄσκουσιν, οὕτως καὶ ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ πάντες ζῳοποιηθήσονται.
4and was declared Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
τοῦ ὁρισθέντος υἱοῦ θεοῦ ἐν δυνάμει κατὰ πνεῦμα ἁγιωσύνης ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν,
United with Christ
We are dead and raised with Christ to a new life.
4So through baptism we were buried with him into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
συνετάφημεν οὖν αὐτῷ διὰ τοῦ βαπτίσματος εἰς τὸν θάνατον, ἵνα ὥσπερ ἠγέρθη Χριστὸς ἐκ νεκρῶν διὰ τῆς δόξης τοῦ πατρός, οὕτως καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐν καινότητι ζωῆς περιπατήσωμεν.
5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in his resurrection as well.
Εἰ γὰρ σύμφυτοι γεγόναμεν τῷ ὁμοιώματι τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως ἐσόμεθα·
1So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Εἰ οὖν συνηγέρθητε τῷ Χριστῷ, τὰ ἄνω ζητεῖτε, οὗ ὁ Χριστός ἐστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θεοῦ καθήμενος·
2Set your minds on the things above, not on the things of earth.
τὰ ἄνω φρονεῖτε, μὴ τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς,
3For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
ἀπεθάνετε γάρ, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷ·
5made us alive together with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses—by grace you have been saved—
καὶ ὄντας ἡμᾶς νεκροὺς τοῖς παραπτώμασιν συνεζωοποίησεν τῷ Χριστῷ— χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι—
6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
καὶ συνήγειρεν καὶ συνεκάθισεν ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ,
Our Future Resurrection
Those who believe in Christ will also be raised with transformed bodies.
42So it is with the resurrection of the dead. It is sown perishable; it is raised imperishable.
Οὕτως καὶ ἡ ἀνάστασις τῶν νεκρῶν. σπείρεται ἐν φθορᾷ, ἐγείρεται ἐν ἀφθαρσίᾳ·
43It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
σπείρεται ἐν ἀτιμίᾳ, ἐγείρεται ἐν δόξῃ· σπείρεται ἐν ἀσθενείᾳ, ἐγείρεται ἐν δυνάμει·
44It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
σπείρεται σῶμα ψυχικόν, ἐγείρεται σῶμα πνευματικόν. ⸀Εἰ ἔστιν σῶμα ψυχικόν, ⸂ἔστιν καὶ⸃ πνευματικόν.
51Listen, I tell you a mystery: we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—
ἰδοὺ μυστήριον ὑμῖν λέγω· ⸀πάντες οὐ κοιμηθησόμεθα πάντες δὲ ἀλλαγησόμεθα,
52in an instant, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
ἐν ἀτόμῳ, ἐν ῥιπῇ ὀφθαλμοῦ, ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ σάλπιγγι· σαλπίσει γάρ, καὶ οἱ νεκροὶ ἐγερθήσονται ἄφθαρτοι, καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀλλαγησόμεθα.
53For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
δεῖ γὰρ τὸ φθαρτὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσασθαι ἀφθαρσίαν καὶ τὸ θνητὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσασθαι ἀθανασίαν.
20But our citizenship is in heaven, and from there we eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
ἡμῶν γὰρ τὸ πολίτευμα ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὑπάρχει, ἐξ οὗ καὶ σωτῆρα ἀπεκδεχόμεθα κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν,
21who will transform our lowly bodies to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control.
ὃς μετασχηματίσει τὸ σῶμα τῆς ταπεινώσεως ⸀ἡμῶν σύμμορφον τῷ σώματι τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ κατὰ τὴν ἐνέργειαν τοῦ δύνασθαι αὐτὸν καὶ ὑποτάξαι ⸀αὑτῷ τὰ πάντα.
Death Is Defeated
Through the resurrection, Christ has removed the sting of death.
54When this perishable has put on the imperishable, and this mortal has put on immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."
ὅταν δὲ τὸ ⸂φθαρτὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσηται ἀφθαρσίαν καὶ τὸ⸃ θνητὸν τοῦτο ἐνδύσηται ⸀ἀθανασίαν, τότε γενήσεται ὁ λόγος ὁ γεγραμμένος· Κατεπόθη ὁ θάνατος εἰς νῖκος.
55"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"
ποῦ σου, θάνατε, τὸ ⸂νῖκος; ποῦ σου, θάνατε, τὸ κέντρον⸃;
56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
τὸ δὲ κέντρον τοῦ θανάτου ἡ ἁμαρτία, ἡ δὲ δύναμις τῆς ἁμαρτίας ὁ νόμος·
57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
τῷ δὲ θεῷ χάρις τῷ διδόντι ἡμῖν τὸ νῖκος διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.
10and has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
φανερωθεῖσαν δὲ νῦν διὰ τῆς ἐπιφανείας τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ⸂Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ⸃, καταργήσαντος μὲν τὸν θάνατον φωτίσαντος δὲ ζωὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν διὰ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου,
14Since, then, the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared fully in the same, so that through death he might break the power of the one who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—
Ἐπεὶ οὖν τὰ παιδία κεκοινώνηκεν ⸂αἵματος καὶ σαρκός⸃, καὶ αὐτὸς παραπλησίως μετέσχεν τῶν αὐτῶν, ἵνα διὰ τοῦ θανάτου καταργήσῃ τὸν τὸ κράτος ἔχοντα τοῦ θανάτου, τοῦτʼ ἔστι τὸν διάβολον,
15and set free all those who through fear of death were held in slavery all their lives.
καὶ ἀπαλλάξῃ τούτους, ὅσοι φόβῳ θανάτου διὰ παντὸς τοῦ ζῆν ἔνοχοι ἦσαν δουλείας.
