39Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself. Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have."

40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

41And while they still did not believe it for joy and were amazed, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"

42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,

43and he took it and ate it in their presence.

44He said to them: "This is what I told you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled."

45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.

46He said to them: "This is what is written: the Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,

47and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

48You are witnesses of these things.

49And behold, I am sending upon you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

19That evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples were together behind locked doors for fear of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."

20After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21Again Jesus said to them, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you."

22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

23If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness, it is withheld."

7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you."

8So they went out and fled from the tomb, trembling and beside themselves. And afterward Jesus himself sent out through them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.⟧

2So she ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him."

3So Peter and the other disciple set out for the tomb.

4They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

5He bent down and looked in, and saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

6Then Simon Peter came up behind him and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there,

7and the cloth that had been around Jesus' head was not with them but folded up by itself in a place of its own.

8Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in. He saw, and he believed.

9For they still did not understand the Scripture, that he had to rise from the dead.

10Then the disciples went back home.

"What things?" he asked. They said to him: "About Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and crucified him.
But we had hoped that he was the one who would redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
What is more, some of our women astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning,
and when they did not find his body, they came back saying they had even seen a vision of angels who said he was alive.
Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see."
He said to them: "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?"
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures.
As they came near the village where they were going, he acted as if he were going farther.
But they urged him strongly: "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
When he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and began to give it to them.
Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him—and he vanished from their sight.
They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
They got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, where they found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,
saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon."
Then the two told what had happened on the road, and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
