David and the commanders of the army set apart for service the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals. This was the number of the men who did this work according to their service:

Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asarelah, sons of Asaph, under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied at the king's command.

Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah — six in all — under the direction of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied with the lyre, giving thanks and praise to the LORD.

Of Heman, the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.

All these were sons of Heman, the king's seer, according to God's promise to raise up his strength. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

All of them were under the direction of their father for the music in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman served under the king's direction.

Their number, together with their kinsmen trained in singing to the LORD — all of them skilled — was two hundred eighty-eight.

They cast lots for their duties, small and great alike, teacher along with pupil.

The first lot fell to Joseph of the family of Asaph; the second to Gedaliah, with his brothers and his sons — twelve;

the third to Zaccur, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the fourth to Izri, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the fifth to Nethaniah, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the sixth to Bukkiah, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the seventh to Jesarelah, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the eighth to Jeshaiah, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the ninth to Mattaniah, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the tenth to Shimei, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the eleventh to Azarel, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the twelfth to Hashabiah, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the thirteenth to Shubael, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the fourteenth to Mattithiah, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the fifteenth to Jeremoth, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

the sixteenth to Hananiah, his sons and his brothers — twelve;

This chapter introduces the three major musical families in temple service: Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun. Asaph was a Levite from the Gershonite clan and is credited in the Book of Psalms as the author of twelve psalms (Ps 50, 73–83). Heman is called "the king’s seer" (חֹזֵה הַמֶּלֶךְ, v. 5) and had fourteen sons and three daughters. Jeduthun, also known as Ethan, was the leader of one of the Levitical music groups. These three families formed the core of temple music throughout the period of the first temple.

Events and Customs

The organization of musicians into twenty-four divisions mirrored the division of the priestly service (chapter 24) and ensured continuous praise in the temple. Lots (גּוֹרָל) were cast to determine the order, emphasizing that God Himself directed the assignment—"the small as well as the great, the master as well as the apprentice" (v. 8). Each group consisted of twelve members, giving a total of 288 trained musicians (v. 7).

The three types of instruments mentioned—the kinnor (lyre), nevel (harp), and metsiltajim (cymbals)—are all known from iconographic representations and archaeological finds in the Levant.
