There was a man from the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Micah.

He said to his mother, "The eleven hundred pieces of silver that were taken from you—about which you uttered a curse and spoke it in my hearing—look, the silver is with me; I took it." His mother said, "May the LORD bless you, my son."

He returned the eleven hundred pieces of silver to his mother, and she said, "I solemnly dedicate this silver to the LORD, from my own hand, for my son, to make a carved image and a cast idol. Now I give it back to you."

So he returned the silver to his mother, and she took two hundred pieces of it and gave them to a silversmith, who made them into a carved image and a cast idol. And it was placed in Micah's house.

This man Micah had a shrine,* and he made an ephod and household idols, and he installed one of his sons to serve him as priest. [*Footnote: Hebrew "a house of God" (or "of gods").]

In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did as he saw fit.

Now there was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah, of the clan of Judah. He was a Levite, and he was staying there.

This man left the town of Bethlehem in Judah to find some other place to live. On his way he came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah.

Micah asked him, "Where do you come from?" He answered, "I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah, and I am looking for a place to live."

Then Micah said to him, "Stay with me and be my father and priest, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year, along with a set of clothes and your food." So the Levite went in.

The Levite agreed to stay with the man, and the young man became like one of his own sons to him.

Micah installed the Levite, and the young man became his priest and lived in his house.

Then Micah said, "Now I know that the LORD will prosper me, since I have a Levite as my priest."

Micah (מִיכָיְהוּ/מִיכָה) is the main character in this chapter. His name means "Who is like YHWH?" – an ironic contrast to his actions. He comes from the hill country of Ephraim and establishes a private sanctuary with idols. Micah represents the religious confusion during the period of the judges, where he mixes worship of YHWH with Canaanite practices, believing this will bring blessing.

The young Levite from Bethlehem is introduced as a wandering priest without a fixed assignment. The fact that a Levite from the region of Judah lived in Bethlehem as a "foreigner" (גָר) suggests that the Levitical system of cities and support (Numbers 35) was not functioning as prescribed. His willingness to serve in a private cult with idols shows how far religious decay had progressed.

Places

The hill country of Ephraim (הַר־אֶפְרָיִם) was the central highland north of Jerusalem. The fact that these events take place here, far from Shiloh where the tabernacle stood, underscores the decentralized and fragmented state of Israel.

Bethlehem in Judah is mentioned as the Levite’s hometown. The city was not one of the designated Levitical cities, confirming that the prescribed system for supporting the Levites had broken down.

The consecration of silver and the idol: The mother’s vow to "consecrate" (הַקְדֵּשׁ הִקְדַּשְׁתִּי) the silver to YHWH in order to make a carved image (פֶּסֶל) and a cast image (מַסֵּכָה) represents a direct violation of the second commandment (Exodus 20:4). The practice of making idols was widespread in Canaanite religion, and the Israelites adopted this custom despite the prohibition. That only 200 of the 1,100 silver pieces were used for the image raises questions about what happened to the rest.

Curse and blessing: The mother’s curse (אָלִית) on the thief and her subsequent blessing when her son confessed reflect the ancient belief in the power of spoken words. People feared that a pronounced curse would take effect, and the blessing was meant to neutralize it.

Ephod (אֵפוֹד) was originally a priestly garment worn by the high priest (Exodus 28), but in private cultic practice it often became an instrument for seeking oracle answers. Here it is used as part of Micah’s private cult equipment.
