When all this had been done, the officials came to me and said: "The people of Israel, along with the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the peoples of the lands and their detestable practices—from the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.

They have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed has been mingled with the peoples of the lands. And the officials and leaders have led the way in this unfaithfulness."

When I heard this, I tore my garment and my robe, pulled hair from my head and my beard, and sat down appalled.

Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles, while I sat appalled until the evening offering.

At the evening offering I rose from my fasting, and having torn my garment and my robe, I fell on my knees and spread out my hands to the LORD my God.

I prayed: "My God, I am ashamed and disgraced to lift up my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has grown up to the heavens.

From the days of our fathers to this day our guilt has been great. Because of our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been handed over to the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to open shame, as it is today.

But now, for a brief moment, the LORD our God has shown us grace by leaving us a remnant and giving us a stake in his holy place, so that our God may brighten our eyes and grant us a little relief in our bondage.

For we are slaves; yet in our bondage our God has not forsaken us. He has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, giving us new life to raise up the house of our God and restore its ruins, and granting us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.

And now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have abandoned your commandments,

which you gave through your servants the prophets when you said: 'The land you are entering to possess is a land defiled by the impurity of its peoples, by their detestable practices, which have filled it with their uncleanness from one end to the other.

Therefore do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or their prosperity, so that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it as an inheritance to your children forever.'

After all that has come upon us because of our evil deeds and our great guilt—and you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve and have given us such a remnant as this—

shall we again break your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who practice these abominations? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us, leaving no remnant, no survivor?

LORD, God of Israel, you are righteous, for we are left as a remnant, as we are this day. Here we are before you in our guilt, for because of it no one can stand in your presence."
