A psalm of Asaph. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I came close to losing my footing.
For I envied the arrogant when I saw how the wicked prosper.
They suffer no pangs at their death; their bodies are sound and sleek.
They are free from the burdens others bear; they are not touched by the plagues of humankind.
So pride is the necklace they wear; violence is the robe that clothes them.
Their eyes bulge with fat; the schemes of their hearts overflow.
They sneer and speak with malice; from on high they threaten oppression.
They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues range over the earth.
And so his people turn back here, and they drain a cup of waters brimming full.
They say, "How would God know? Does the Most High have any knowledge?"
Look at them: these are the wicked, always at ease, increasing in wealth.
Surely I have kept my heart pure in vain and washed my hands in innocence for nothing.
For all day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishment.
If I had said, "I will talk like this," I would have betrayed the generation of your children.
So I tried to understand all this, but it was a wearisome task in my eyes—
until I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end.
Surely you set them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
How suddenly they are laid waste, swept away and finished by terrors!
Like a dream when one awakes, so, Lord, when you rise up, you despise them as phantoms.
When my heart was embittered and my inmost being pierced,
I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you? And having you, I desire nothing on earth.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever.
Those who are far from you will surely perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, so that I may tell of all your works.
