Woe to those who devise iniquity, who work out evil on their beds! At dawn they carry it out, because they have the power to do it.

They covet fields and seize them, houses too, and take them away. They oppress a man and his household, a person and his inheritance.

Therefore this is what the LORD says: See, I am planning disaster against this family, and you will not slip your necks out of it. You will no longer walk with your heads held high, for it will be a time of disaster.

On that day they will taunt you with this saying, and wail this bitter lament: "We are utterly ruined! He exchanges the portion of my people; he takes it away from me and parcels out our fields to the traitor."

Therefore you will have no one in the assembly of the LORD to cast the measuring line for an allotment.

"Stop preaching!" they preach. "Do not preach about such things; disgrace will never overtake us."

Should this be said, house of Jacob? Is the Spirit of the LORD short of patience? Are these his doings? Do my words not bring good to the one who walks uprightly?

But lately you have risen up against my people as an enemy. You strip the robe from those who pass by in peace, from those returning from war.

You drive the women of my people from their pleasant homes; you take away my glory from their children forever.

Get up and go, for this is no place of rest! Because it is defiled, it brings ruin—a grievous ruin.

If a man full of wind and falsehood should lie and say, "I will preach to you of wine and strong drink," he would be just the preacher for this people!

I will surely gather all of you, Jacob; I will surely bring together the remnant of Israel. I will place them like sheep in a fold, like a flock in its pasture—a noisy throng of people.

The one who breaks open the way goes up before them; they break through the gate and pass out through it. Their king passes on before them, and the LORD at their head.

The chapter describes a specific form of economic oppression: the systematic seizure of land from small farmers. Verses 1–2 depict how wealthy elites planned their wicked deeds at night and carried them out at dawn—a practice that exploited legal loopholes and positions of power. In ancient Israel, land was not merely economic capital but a God-given inheritance (נַחֲלָה, naḥalah) that was to remain within the family according to the Mosaic Law (Lev 25:23–28; Num 36:7). To deprive a man of his ancestral portion was therefore both an economic crime and an attack on the divine social order. Archaeological investigations in Judah reveal a marked concentration of wealth and the emergence of large estates during this period, confirming the prophet’s accusations.

The expression "to drip" (נָטַף, nāṭaf, in hif‘il: הִטִּיף, hiṭṭif) in verses 6 and 11 is a special prophetic term describing prophetic speech that "drips" down like rain.
