These too are proverbs of Solomon, copied out by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah.
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, and the glory of kings to search a matter out.
The heavens for height, the earth for depth, and the heart of kings—beyond searching.
Remove the dross from the silver, and a vessel comes forth for the smith.
Remove the wicked from the king's presence, and his throne will be established in righteousness.
Do not put yourself forward in the king's presence, and do not stand in the place of the great.
Better to be told, "Come up here," than to be humbled before a noble whom your eyes have seen.
Do not rush out to court, or what will you do in the end, when your neighbor puts you to shame?
Argue your case with your neighbor himself, but do not betray another's confidence,
lest the one who hears it disgrace you, and the bad report about you never fade.
Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken at the right time.
Like a gold ring or an ornament of fine gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear.
Like the cold of snow at harvest time is a faithful messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the spirit of his masters.
Clouds and wind but no rain—such is the one who boasts of gifts he never gives.
With patience a ruler is persuaded, and a soft tongue can break a bone.
If you find honey, eat just enough—too much, and you will vomit it up.
Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, or he will have his fill of you and hate you.
A club, a sword, a sharpened arrow—such is one who bears false witness against his neighbor.
A broken tooth, a foot that gives way—such is trust in a traitor on the day of trouble.
Like stripping off a garment on a cold day, or vinegar poured on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
For you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.
The north wind brings forth rain, and a whispering tongue brings angry looks.
Better to live on a corner of the roof than in a shared house with a quarrelsome wife.
Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.
A muddied spring, a polluted fountain—such is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.
It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it glory to search out one's own glory.
A city broken into and left without walls—such is a man without self-control.
