In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria marched against all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.

The king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh* from Lachish to Jerusalem, to King Hezekiah, with a large army. He took his stand by the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer's Field. [*Footnote: Rabshakeh is an Assyrian title for a high-ranking royal official, not a personal name.]

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the palace administrator, went out to him, along with Shebna the secretary and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder.

The Rabshakeh said to them: "Tell Hezekiah this: Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: What is this confidence of yours?

I say your strategy and your strength for war are nothing but empty words. Now, in whom are you trusting, that you have rebelled against me?

Look, you are trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who trust in him.

And if you say to me, 'We trust in the LORD our God'—is he not the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, 'You must worship before this altar'?

Come now, make a bargain with my lord the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!

How then can you turn back even one of the least of my lord's officers, when you rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

And now, was it apart from the LORD that I came up against this land to destroy it? The LORD himself said to me, 'Go up against this land and destroy it.'"

Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall."

But the Rabshakeh said, "Was it to your master and to you that my lord sent me to say these things? Was it not to the men sitting on the wall, who will have to eat their own dung and drink their own urine along with you?"

Then the Rabshakeh stood and shouted in a loud voice in Hebrew: "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!"

Thus says the king: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he cannot rescue you.

Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD by saying, 'The LORD will surely rescue us; this city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.'

Do not listen to Hezekiah! For thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me,* and every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree and drink water from his own cistern, [*Footnote: Literally "make a blessing with me," an idiom for accepting terms of surrender.]

Do not let Hezekiah mislead you by saying, 'The LORD will rescue us.' Has any god of any nation ever rescued his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?

Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Did they rescue Samaria from my hand?

Which of all the gods of these lands has rescued his land from my hand, that the LORD should rescue Jerusalem from my hand?"

But the people were silent and answered him not a word, for the king had commanded, "Do not answer him."

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and reported to him the words of the Rabshakeh.

People

Hezekiah (חִזְקִיָּהוּ) was king of Judah from approximately 715–687 B.C. and is known for his religious reforms, including the removal of high places and altars outside Jerusalem (v. 7). His name means "The LORD is my strength." Sennacherib (סַנְחֵרִיב) reigned as king of Assyria from 705–681 B.C. His campaign against Judah in 701 B.C. is well documented in Assyrian annals.

Rabshakeh (רַב־שָׁקֵה) is not a personal name but a military-diplomatic title. Its meaning is debated, but it may mean "chief officer" or "commander-in-chief." He served as Sennacherib's spokesperson and diplomatic envoy. The three Jude officials who met him—Eliakim (steward), Shebna (scribe), and Joah (recorder)—represented Hezekiah's highest administration.

Places

Lachish (לָּכִישׁ), from where Rabshakeh was sent, was Judah's second most important fortified city after Jerusalem.
