Hear the word of the LORD, people of Israel, for the LORD has a case against those who live in the land: There is no faithfulness, no steadfast love, no knowledge of God in the land.
Cursing and lying, murder and stealing and adultery — they break out, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
That is why the land mourns and everyone living in it wastes away, together with the beasts of the field and the birds of the sky; even the fish of the sea are swept away.
Yet let no one bring a charge, let no one accuse — for your people are like those who quarrel with a priest.
You stumble by day, and the prophet stumbles with you by night; and I will destroy your mother.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from serving me as priest; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I too will forget your children.
The more they multiplied, the more they sinned against me; I will turn their glory into shame.
They feed on the sin of my people and set their hearts on their guilt.
And it will be: like people, like priest. I will punish them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.
They will eat but not be satisfied; they will play the whore but not increase, because they have abandoned the LORD to devote themselves—
to whoring, to wine and new wine, which steal the heart.
My people consult a piece of wood, and their stick tells them what to do. A spirit of whoredom has led them astray; they have played the whore and deserted their God.
They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak and poplar and terebinth, because the shade is pleasant. That is why your daughters play the whore and your daughters-in-law commit adultery.
I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery, for the men themselves slip away with prostitutes and sacrifice with temple women. So a people without understanding comes to ruin.
Though you play the whore, Israel, let Judah not become guilty. Do not go to Gilgal, do not go up to Beth-aven, and do not swear, "As the LORD lives!"
Israel is as stubborn as a stubborn heifer. Should the LORD now graze them like a lamb in an open meadow?
Ephraim is bound to idols; leave him alone.
When their drinking is done, they give themselves to whoring; their rulers dearly love disgrace.
A wind has wrapped them in its wings, and they will be put to shame because of their sacrifices.
