Sardis

Have endured and not denied Jesus' name. Given an open door. No criticism.

Laodicea

Lukewarm - neither cold nor hot. Think they are rich, but are poor and naked.

Praise: none. Criticism: lukewarm and self-satisfied

To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of the one who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your works: you have a name for being alive, but you are dead.

Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is on the point of death, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.

So remember how you received and heard it; hold on to it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come upon you.

Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.

The one who conquers will be clothed like them in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life; I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the Holy One, the True One, who holds the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

I know your works. Look, I have set before you an open door that no one can shut. You have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

Look, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews and are not, but are lying—I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will know that I have loved you.

Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have, so that no one takes your crown.

The one who conquers I will make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will never leave it again. I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from my God, and my own new name.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.[^a] [^a]: Or *the origin*, or *the ruler*, of God's creation.

I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot!

So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

You say, "I am rich; I have prospered and need nothing," and you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich; and white garments to wear, so that the shame of your nakedness may not be exposed; and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent.

Look, I am standing at the door and knocking. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

To the one who conquers I will grant to sit with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Whoever has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Places

Sardis (verses 1–6) was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia and had a proud history as one of the wealthiest cities of antiquity. The city sat on an apparently impregnable cliff but was surprisingly conquered twice – by the Persians under Cyrus in 546 BC and by Antiochus III in 214 BC – both times because the guards fell asleep and the enemy climbed up where they were least expected. Thus, the warning to "wake up" and that Christ will come "like a thief" (verses 2–3) had deep local resonance. The city was also known for its wool dyeing and textile production, which provides background for the promise of "white garments."

Philadelphia (verses 7–13) was the youngest of the seven cities, founded in the second century BC by King Attalus II of Pergamon, who earned the nickname "Philadelphus" (brother's friend) because of his loyalty to his brother. The city lay in an earthquake-prone area and was severely affected by the great earthquake of 17 AD. Residents had repeatedly to flee the city due to aftershocks. The promise that the one who overcomes will become "a pillar in God's temple" and "will never go out again" (verse 12) spoke directly to people who had experienced having to leave unstable buildings time after time.

Laodicea (verses 14–22) was a prosperous trading city in the Lycus Valley, known for three things: banking and financial wealth, production of black wool, and a medical school that manufactured eye salve (kollyrium). After a devastating earthquake in 60 AD, the city proudly refused Roman economic aid and rebuilt itself. The city's water supply came via aqueducts from hot springs at Hierapolis, and the water arrived lukewarm and mineral-rich – in contrast to the cold, fresh water of Colossae or the health-giving warm water at the source.

Events and Customs

The mention of "Satan's synagogue" in Philadelphia (verse 9) reflects the tension between the Christian congregation and the Jewish community in the city. Jews had legal privileges in the Roman Empire, including exemption from emperor worship, and it was important for authorities to define who were "true" Jews. The Christians – many of them Gentile believers – were likely excluded from the synagogue and thus exposed to pressure to participate in emperor worship. The promise that opponents will "bow down at your feet" reverses a traditional expectation that Gentiles would acknowledge Israel.

The image of "eating a meal together" (verse 20) alludes to the Roman convivium, an important social ritual where hospitality expressed close relationships. Sharing the evening meal (δειπνήσω, deipnēsō) meant sharing the most intimate meal of the day and signaled deep friendship and covenant fellowship.

Key Terms

"The key of David" (verse 7, τὴν κλεῖν Δαυίδ) is a reference to Isaiah 22:22 and Eliakim, who received authority over the king's house. In Jewish tradition, this was linked to messianic authority over who gains access to God's kingdom. For a congregation experiencing exclusion from the synagogue, this was a powerful assurance that Christ – not the synagogue leaders – held final authority over access to God's people.

"Lukewarm" (verse 16, χλιαρός, chliaros) describes water that is neither refreshingly cold nor therapeutically warm. Laodicea's famous water problem – lukewarm, chalky water that could induce nausea – made this metaphor immediately recognizable to its recipients.

"Kollyrium" (verse 18, κολλούριον) was an eye salve that Laodicea was famous for producing. It was made in the form of small cakes and used against various eye diseases. The irony is sharp: the city that exported eye medicine throughout the Roman Empire was itself spiritually blind.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Archaeological excavations in Laodicea have uncovered remains of the city's impressive aqueduct system, including pipes with significant mineral deposits confirming the problem with mineral-rich water. Inscriptions from the city testify to its banking activities and wealth. In Sardis, remains of a large gymnasium and a synagogue have been found, attesting to a substantial Jewish community. Excavations in Philadelphia are more limited due to modern settlement, but inscriptions confirm the city's vulnerability to earthquakes and its repeated rebuilding.
