White Horse

The rider has a bow and a crown - he goes out to conquer.

Silence for half an hour. The seven trumpets are prepared.

Then I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, "Come!"

And I looked, and there was a white horse. Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out conquering and to conquer.

When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!"

And out came another horse, fiery red. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth, so that people would slaughter one another, and he was given a great sword.

When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" And I looked, and there was a black horse, and its rider held a pair of scales in his hand.

Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius—but do not damage the oil and the wine!"

When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!"

And I looked, and there was a pale green horse. Its rider was named Death, and Hades followed close behind him. They were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill by sword, by famine, by plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld.

They cried out with a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"

Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was complete.

I watched as he opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun turned black as sackcloth of hair, and the whole moon became like blood,

and the stars of heaven fell to the earth as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when shaken by a strong wind.

The sky was split apart like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place.

Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and everyone, slave and free alike, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.

They said to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!

For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?

The white horse with a rider carrying a bow (τόξον) could evoke associations with Parthian warriors who were notorious for their archery skills.

The pricing mentioned in verse 6 reflects real economic conditions. A χοῖνιξ (choinix) was the daily grain ration for one person, and a δηνάριον (denar) was a typical day's wage. Under normal circumstances, one could buy approximately 8–12 choinixer of wheat for one denar.
