The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,

who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ — all that he saw.

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear them and keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

John, to the seven churches in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne,

and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood,

and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father — to him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen.

Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. Yes. Amen.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

I, John, your brother who shares with you in the suffering and the kingdom and the patient endurance in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

On the Lord's day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,

saying, "Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea."

I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands,

and among the lampstands one like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching to his feet, with a golden sash around his chest.

His head and his hair were white as wool, white as snow, and his eyes were like a blazing fire.

His feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.

In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in full strength.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last,

and the living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and of Hades.

So write what you have seen, what is now, and what is to happen after this.

As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

People

John identifies himself as "your brother and partner in the tribulation" (v. 9), writing as one who shares in the sufferings of the churches, not as a distant authority. The expression "the word of God and the testimony of Jesus" (vv. 2, 9) had by this period become almost a technical term for Christian proclamation that could lead to conflict with Roman authorities.

Places

Patmos (v. 9) is a small, rocky island in the eastern Aegean Sea, about 60 km southwest of Miletus. The island is approximately 13 km long and 10 km wide. The Romans used islands in the Aegean as places of exile for political prisoners and religious dissidents. That John was there "for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus" suggests he had been exiled because of his Christian activity.

The seven churches in Asia (v. 11) – Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea – were all located in the Roman province of Asia (modern-day western Turkey). The order in which they are mentioned forms a natural travel route clockwise from Ephesus along the Roman roads.

Events and Customs

"The Lord’s day" (τῇ κυριακῇ ἡμέρᾳ, v. 10) is one of the earliest known examples of this expression for Sunday in Christian literature. It marks an important distinction from the Jewish Sabbath (Saturday) and shows that Christians had already established Sunday as their special day for worship – likely because Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday. The expression may also have had a polemical edge against the imperial cult, which used similar terminology ("Sebastē" – "the emperor’s day").

Public reading aloud (v. 3) reflects common practice in the early churches. Most believers could not read, and scrolls were expensive. One person would read aloud ("the one who reads") while the congregation listened ("those who hear"). This pattern was adopted from synagogue practice and shows how Revelation was intended to function in worship services.

Key Terms

Ἀποκάλυψις (apokalypsis, v. 1) means "unveiling" or "revelation" – removing a veil so that something hidden becomes visible. The text specifies that the revelation comes from God through Jesus Christ and his angel to John (vv. 1–2), a clear chain of communication.

ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος ("the one who is and who was and who is coming", vv. 4, 8) is an extended paraphrase of the divine name YHWH from Exodus 3:14. The Greek form deliberately breaks normal grammar (ἀπὸ + nominative instead of genitive) to emphasize God’s unchanging nature. The addition "who is coming" gives the expression a forward-looking dimension that points toward God’s future intervention.

Παντοκράτωρ (pantokratōr, "the Almighty", v. 8) is used in the Septuagint to render the Hebrew "Lord of hosts" (Yahweh Sabaoth). In a context where the emperor was portrayed as ruler of the world, this is a powerful confession: It is Israel’s God, not the emperor, who holds all power.

ὅμοιον υἱὸν ἀνθρώπου ("one like a son of man", v. 13) directly alludes to Daniel 7:13, where "one like a son of man" comes with the clouds of heaven and receives eternal dominion. The description of the exalted Christ in vv. 13–16 combines elements from several Old Testament theophanies: the white hair from "the Ancient of Days" (Dan 7:9), eyes like blazing fire (Dan 10:6), and feet like burnished bronze (Ezek 1:27; Dan 10:6).

χαλκολιβάνῳ (khalkolíbanon, v. 15) is a rare word describing the feet of the exalted Christ. It likely refers to a valuable bronze alloy or brass with particular luster. Thyatira, one of the seven cities, was known for its metalwork, and the word may have had special resonance there.

τὰς κλεῖς τοῦ θανάτου καὶ τοῦ ᾅδου ("the keys of death and Hades", v. 18) express Christ’s sovereign power over death. In antiquity, keys symbolized authority and control over access. Christ holds this power because he himself died and lives again (v. 18).
