Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, "Go, pour out the seven bowls of God's wrath on the earth!"

The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and painful, festering sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.

The second angel poured out his bowl into the sea, and it turned to blood like that of a corpse, and every living thing in the sea died.

The third angel poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they turned to blood.

Then I heard the angel of the waters say: "You are just, you who are and who were, the Holy One, because you have judged these things.

For they poured out the blood of the saints and the prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. They deserve it!

And I heard the altar say: "Yes, Lord God Almighty, your judgments are true and just!"

The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was given power to scorch people with fire.

They were seared by the intense heat, and they cursed the name of God, who had authority over these plagues, but they refused to repent and give him glory.

The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in agony,

and they cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done.

The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the east.

Then I saw three unclean spirits that looked like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.

"Look, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he does not walk around naked and let his shame be seen."

And they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, "It is done!"

Then came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a violent earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth—so tremendous was the quake.

The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.

Every island fled, and the mountains could not be found.

And huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds, fell from the sky on the people, and they cursed God because of the plague of hail, for that plague was terrible beyond measure.

Places

The River Euphrates (v. 12) was the great river that formed the eastern border of the Roman Empire against the Parthian Empire. For John’s contemporary readers, the Euphrates represented both a geographical and political reality: the Parthian Empire east of the river was the only power capable of threatening Rome militarily. The Romans feared an invasion from the east, and several times during the first century, Parthian armies threatened to cross this border. The image of the river drying up to make way for "the kings from the east" would evoke strong associations with this fear, while also drawing on the Old Testament motif of Cyrus conquering Babylon by diverting the Euphrates (Isaiah 44:27–28).

Armageddon (v. 16), Greek Ἁρμαγεδών (from Hebrew), likely refers to "the mountain of Megiddo" (הר מגידו, har megiddo). Megiddo was a strategic city in the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel, where several decisive battles in Israel’s history took place, including Barak’s victory over Sisera (Judges 5:19) and King Josiah’s death in battle against Pharaoh Neco (2 Kings 23:29). The site thus carried strong apocalyptic connotations as the battlefield for the final confrontation.

Events and Customs

The bowls and plagues in this chapter have clear parallels with the Egyptian plagues in Exodus: boils (Exodus 9:10), water turned to blood (Exodus 7:17–21), darkness (Exodus 10:21–22), and hail (Exodus 9:23–24). For Jewish and Jewish-Christian readers, this created a clear typological connection: just as God judged Egypt for oppressing His people, He now judges "the beast’s kingdom" for persecuting the saints. Greek-speaking readers would also be familiar with plague traditions from Hellenistic-Jewish literature such as the Book of Wisdom.

"The kings from the whole world" (v. 14) gather for war. In the Roman world, the image of a worldwide coalition of kings was well known from both historical campaigns and propaganda writings. The phrase ἡ οἰκουμένη ὅλη ("the whole inhabited world") was an expression the Romans themselves used to describe their empire, but here it is expanded to include all rulers on earth in opposition to God.

Key Terms

Φιάλη (fialē, "bowl") refers to the flat, wide offering bowls used in temple worship for pouring out drink offerings. When these bowls are now poured out as judgment, the act of offering is inverted: instead of receiving blessing from God, the earth experiences God’s wrath. This liturgical image is reinforced by the command coming from the temple (ναός) in verse 1.

Χάραγμα (charagma, "mark") in verse 2 refers to the mark of the beast introduced in chapter 13. In antiquity, this word was used for stamps on documents, brands on slaves, and inscriptions on coins—often bearing the emperor’s image and name. The plague of boils that strikes those with the mark creates an ironic contrast: the mark that was meant to provide economic security now becomes an identifier for judgment.

Βάτραχοι (batrachoi, "frogs") in verse 13 carried negative associations in Jewish tradition from the Egyptian frog plague (Exodus 8:1–15). In Greco-Roman culture, frogs were often associated with marshes, decay, and unclean places, which reinforces the image of demonic spirits as both repulsive and deceptive.

Ταλαντιαία (talantiaía, "a talent’s weight") in verse 21 describes hailstones weighing about 25–35 kilograms. This hyperbolic image emphasizes the overwhelming nature of the judgment, surpassing any natural hailstorm known from antiquity.
