Once David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the LORD's covenant stays under tent curtains."
Nathan said to David, "Do whatever is in your heart, for God is with you."
But that night the word of God came to Nathan:
"Go and tell David my servant: This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in.
I have never lived in a house from the day I brought Israel up until this day; I have gone from tent to tent, from one dwelling place to another.
Wherever I have journeyed with all Israel, did I ever say a word to any of Israel's judges, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, asking, 'Why have you not built me a house of cedar?'
Now then, say this to my servant David: This is what the LORD of hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth.
I will provide a place for my people Israel and plant them there, so that they may dwell in their own home and be disturbed no more. Wicked men will no longer wear them down, as they did at the beginning,
from the days when I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. I also declare to you that the LORD will build you a house.
When your days are done and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.
He is the one who will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.
I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to me. I will never withdraw my steadfast love from him, as I withdrew it from the one who came before you.
I will set him firmly in my house and in my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever."
Nathan reported to David all these words and this entire vision.
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, LORD God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?
And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of your servant's house. You have looked on me as though I were the most highly honored of men, LORD God.
What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant.
LORD, for the sake of your servant and according to your own heart, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.
LORD, there is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whom God went out to redeem as a people for himself, making a name for yourself by great and awesome deeds, driving out nations before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, LORD, became their God.
And now, LORD, let the word you have spoken concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you have promised,
so that it may stand and your name may be magnified forever, and people will say, 'The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is God to Israel, and the house of your servant David stands firm before you.'
You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build him a house. That is why your servant has found the courage to pray before you.
And now, LORD, you are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.
Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you. For you, LORD, have blessed it, and it is blessed forever."
