Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

Make room for us. We have wronged no one, ruined no one, exploited no one.

I do not say this to condemn you; I have already told you that you are in our hearts, so that we die together and live together.

I speak to you with great confidence; I take great pride in you. I am filled with comfort; my joy overflows in all our affliction.

For even when we came to Macedonia, our bodies had no rest. We were afflicted at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within.

But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the arrival of Titus—

and not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort he had received concerning you. He told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced all the more.

For even if I grieved you with my letter, I do not regret it. And even if I did regret it—I see that the letter grieved you, though only for a while—

now I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led you to repentance. For you were grieved as God intended, so that you suffered no loss in any way from us.

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly grief produces death.

See what this godly grief has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what readiness to see justice done! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in this matter.

So then, although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who was wronged, but so that your earnestness on our behalf might be made clear to you in the sight of God.

This is why we have been comforted. And besides our own comfort, we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.

For if I boasted to him about you, I was not put to shame. Just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting to Titus has proved true as well.

And his affection for you is all the greater as he remembers how obedient you all were, receiving him with fear and trembling.

I rejoice that I can have complete confidence in you.

Paul describes the situation there as marked by "struggles without, fears within" (v. 5), suggesting opposition both from outsiders and inner concerns for the churches.

Events and Customs

The chapter refers to a previous letter Paul had sent to the Corinthians that had caused them grief (v. 8). This is often called the "tearful letter" and is probably not preserved, although some scholars believe it may be identical with 2 Cor 10–13.
