This will be my third visit to you. "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses."

I already warned you when I was with you the second time, and I warn you again now while absent, to those who sinned before and to all the rest: if I come again, I will not spare anyone,

since you are demanding proof that Christ speaks through me. He is not weak in dealing with you; he is powerful among you.

For he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by the power of God. And we too are weak in him, yet in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Or do you not realize about yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you — unless, of course, you fail the test?

And I hope you will come to see that we ourselves have not failed the test.

We pray to God that you may do nothing wrong — not so that we may appear approved, but so that you may do what is right, even if we should seem to have failed.

For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth.

For we rejoice whenever we are weak and you are strong; and this too is what we pray for: your full restoration.

This is why I write these things while absent, so that when I come I need not deal harshly in using the authority the Lord gave me — authority for building up, not for tearing down.

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. Be restored, be encouraged, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints send you greetings.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

The Rule of Witnesses (verse 1)

Paul cites the principle that "every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses" (Deuteronomy 19:15). This was a fundamental legal rule in Jewish judicial practice that ensured justice and protected against false accusations. In the Greco-Roman world, similar principles regarding witness testimony existed in court proceedings. Paul applies this legal principle to his upcoming third visit—either as an image of the three visits that serve as "witnesses", or as a warning that he will follow proper procedure when addressing the church's problems.

The Holy Kiss (verse 12)

The greeting "ἐν ἁγίῳ φιλήματι" (with a holy kiss) refers to an established custom in early Christian communities. Kissing as a form of greeting was common in antiquity, especially in Jewish and Eastern Mediterranean cultures, but the "holy" kiss marked the distinctive character of the Christian community. The closing benediction "ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἡ κοινωνία τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος" is the most developed Trinitarian formula in Paul's letters. The word "κοινωνία" (koinōnia) means fellowship, participation, or communion, and expresses the deep connection believers have with one another and with God through the Spirit. This benediction has become one of the most widely used liturgical formulas in church history.
