But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will smuggle in destructive heresies, denying the Master who bought them, and so bring swift destruction on themselves.

Many will follow their debauchery, and because of them the way of truth will be slandered.

In their greed they will exploit you with fabricated words. Their condemnation, pronounced long ago, is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell in chains of darkness, handing them over to be kept for judgment;

and if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought the flood upon a world of the ungodly;

and if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ruin, reducing them to ashes and making them an example of what is coming to the ungodly;

and if he rescued righteous Lot, worn down by the depraved conduct of the lawless—

for that righteous man, living among them, was tormented in his righteous soul day after day by the lawless deeds he saw and heard—

then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment,

especially those who follow the corrupt cravings of the flesh and despise all authority. Bold and arrogant, they do not tremble to slander glorious beings,

whereas angels, though greater in strength and power, do not bring a slanderous judgment against them.

These men are like irrational animals, creatures of instinct born to be caught and killed. They slander what they do not understand, and like animals they too will be destroyed,

suffering the wrong they have earned as their wages. They count it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions while they feast with you,

their eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They lure unstable souls; their hearts are trained in greed; they are children of a curse.

They have left the straight road and gone astray, following the way of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved the wages of wickedness.

But he was rebuked for his transgression: a mute donkey spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet's madness.

These men are springs without water, mists driven by a storm; the gloom of darkness is reserved for them.

For they mouth high-sounding but empty words, and by appealing to the lusts of the flesh and to debauchery they lure those who are barely escaping from those who live in error.

They promise them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption—for a person is a slave to whatever has mastered him.

For if they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and are then entangled and overcome by them again, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.

It would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than, having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment entrusted to them.

What the true proverb says has happened to them: "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A washed sow goes back to wallowing in the mud."

This explicitly positive assessment of Lot goes beyond the more ambivalent portrait in the Genesis narrative and reflects Jewish tradition from the intertestamental period (cf. Wisdom of Solomon 10:6). Balaam son of Beor (vv. 15–16) is used as a typical example of a false prophet motivated by greed.
