Events and Customs

Peace offering (שְׁלָמִים, shelamim) is the central ritual in this chapter. Unlike the burnt offering (chapter 1), where the entire animal was burned on the altar, the peace offering was a communal meal in which the sacrifice was shared between God (the fat burned on the altar) and the offerer (the meat). This was one of the few offerings in which the ordinary Israelite could eat part of the sacrificial meat, giving the ritual a festive and community-oriented character. Such shared meals with the deity were common throughout the ancient Near East; Mesopotamian and Canaanite cultures also practiced sacrifices where human participants ate together with their gods.

Laying on of hands (סָמַךְ, samakh) mentioned in verses 2, 8, and 13 was a ritual act in which the offerer placed his hand on the animal's head before slaughter. This symbolized identification between the giver and the offering, marking it as that person's own sacrifice to God. Similar customs are documented in Hittite and Mesopotamian ritual texts.

Key Terms

The Hebrew word שְׁלָמִים (shelamim) is traditionally translated "peace offering" or "thank offering", but carries deeper meaning. The word is related to שָׁלוֹם (shalom) – peace, wholeness, well-being – and indicates that this sacrifice marked a harmonious relationship between humanity and God.

חֵלֶב (chelev) – the fat – belonged exclusively to God and had to be burned on the altar at all times (v. 16-17). Fat was regarded as the richest and best part of the animal. The prohibition against eating fat and blood (v. 17) stood as an "eternal statute" and distinguished Israel's practice from neighboring peoples, among whom fat was often considered a delicacy.

אַלְיָה (alyah) in verse 9 refers to the fatty tail of certain sheep breeds found in the ancient Near East. These "broad-tailed sheep" had enormous fatty tails that could weigh 5–15 kg and were highly valued. This breed (Ovis aries laticaudata) was common in the ancient Near East and still exists in the region today.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Archaeological excavations at several Israelite cult sites, including Arad and Beersheba, have uncovered altars with remains of burned animal bones and ash. Analyses show that fatty parts were often burned, which aligns with the instructions given in this chapter. The bone material also indicates that cattle, sheep, and goats – exactly the animals mentioned in chapter 3 – were the most common sacrificial animals, while fat is rarely found among the refuse, suggesting it was burned on the altar as described in the text.
