For the law is only a shadow of the good things to come, not the true form of those realities. So it can never, by the same sacrifices offered year after year without end, perfect those who draw near.

Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers, once cleansed, would no longer have had any consciousness of sins.

Instead, in those sacrifices there is a yearly reminder of sins,

since it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;

with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.

Then I said, 'Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll of the book—I have come to do your will, O God.'"

First he says, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them"—and these are offered according to the law.

Then he says, "Here I am; I have come to do your will." He does away with the first in order to establish the second.

And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Every priest stands day after day performing his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

But when this priest had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,

and since then he waits until his enemies are made a footstool for his feet.

For by one offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:

"This is the covenant I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds."

Then he adds: "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."

And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any offering for sin.

So then, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus,

by the new and living way he opened for us through the curtain—that is, through his flesh—

and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

let us draw near with a true heart in the full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Let us hold unwaveringly to the confession of our hope, for he who promised is faithful.

And let us consider how to spur one another on toward love and good works,

not neglecting to meet together, as some have made a habit of neglecting, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

For if we deliberately go on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,

but only a terrifying expectation of judgment and a raging fire ready to consume the adversaries.

Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

How much worse punishment do you think someone deserves who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as unholy the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

For we know him who said, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Remember those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with suffering:

sometimes publicly exposed to insult and affliction, and sometimes standing side by side with those who were treated that way.

You suffered along with the prisoners and joyfully accepted the seizure of your property, knowing that you yourselves had a better and lasting possession.

So do not throw away your confidence; it carries a great reward.

You need endurance, so that after you have done the will of God you may receive what he has promised.

For yet "in a very little while, the one who is coming will come and will not delay.

But my righteous one will live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul takes no pleasure in him."

But we are not among those who shrink back and are destroyed, but among those who have faith and preserve their souls.

On this day, the high priest entered the Most Holy Place with blood from a bull (for his own sins) and a goat (for the people’s sins). The author emphasizes that this annual repetition itself demonstrates the inadequacy of the ritual—if it had been fully effective, there would have been no need to repeat it.

Verse 11 describes how "every priest stands day after day" performing his service. This reflects the daily sacrificial system in the temple, where priests on rotation carried out the morning and evening offerings, as well as the many individual sin offerings and burnt offerings brought throughout the year. The fact that the priest "stands" is deliberately contrasted with Christ having "sat down" (verse 12)—there were no chairs in the temple because the priest’s work was never finished.
