Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble for me, and it is a safeguard for you.

Watch out for the dogs, watch out for the evil workers, watch out for those who mutilate the flesh.[^1] [^1]: Paul coins a wordplay: "the mutilation" (katatomē) over against "the circumcision" (peritomē) in the next verse.

For we are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who boast in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh—

though I myself have grounds for confidence in the flesh as well. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more:

circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;

as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.

But whatever was to my profit I now regard as loss for the sake of Christ.

More than that, I count everything as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have lost it all, and I consider it garbage, in order that I may gain Christ

and be found in him—not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.

I want to know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to him in his death,

so that somehow I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Not that I have already obtained it or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ took hold of me.

Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it yet. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what lies ahead,

I press on toward the goal, to win the prize of God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus.

So all of us who are mature should think this way. And if you think differently about anything, God will make that clear to you as well.

Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

Together, become imitators of me, brothers, and keep your eyes on those who live as we do, for you have us as a pattern.

For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ, as I have often told you, and now I tell you again with tears.

Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things.

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from there we eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

who will transform our lowly bodies to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control.

Inscriptions from Philippi show extensive use of πολίτευμα terminology and pride in the city’s status as a colonia with Roman citizenship rights. This makes Paul’s redefinition of the term in verse 20 particularly striking: their heavenly belonging surpasses even the coveted Roman citizenship. Archaeological findings also confirm the presence of Jewish diaspora communities in Macedonia, making Paul’s warning against Judaizing teachers relevant to the local situation of the congregation.
