In the same way, wives, submit to your own husbands, so that even if some of them do not obey the word, they may be won over without a word by the conduct of their wives,

when they observe the purity and reverence of your lives.

Let your beauty not be outward—braided hair, gold ornaments, fine clothes—

but the hidden person of the heart, the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

For this is how the holy women of the past, who set their hope in God, used to adorn themselves, submitting to their own husbands,

as Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. You are her children if you do what is good and let nothing terrify you.

Husbands, in the same way, live considerately with your wives, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since she too is a fellow heir of the grace of life—so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Finally, all of you: be of one mind, sympathetic, loving one another as brothers and sisters, compassionate, humble.

Do not repay evil for evil or insult for insult, but on the contrary, bless—because to this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing.

For whoever wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;

he must turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

And who will harm you if you are eager to do good?

But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be shaken.

Instead, in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord, always ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you to explain the hope that is in you—

yet do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping a clear conscience, so that when you are slandered, those who malign your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.

For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

in which he also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison,

who long ago were disobedient, while God waited patiently in the days of Noah as the ark was being built. In it only a few—eight souls in all—were brought safely through the water.

And this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you as well—not the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.
