Jesus calms the stormMML

Jesus shows power over the forces of nature.

MatteusevangelietMatt 8:23-27

23Then he got into the boat, and his disciples followed him.

24Suddenly a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But Jesus was sleeping.

25So they came and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We are perishing!"

26He said to them, "Why are you afraid, you of little faith?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

27The men were amazed and said, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him!"

35That day, when evening came, he said to them, "Let's cross over to the other side."

36So they left the crowd behind and took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats went along with him.

37A fierce squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was already being swamped.

38Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him and said, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?"

39He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Quiet! Be still!" The wind died down, and there was a great calm.

40He said to them, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"

41They were terrified and said to one another, "Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!"

22One day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side of the lake." So they set out.

23As they sailed, he fell asleep. A violent squall came down on the lake, and the boat was filling up, and they were in danger.

24They went to him and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they subsided, and there was a calm.

25Then he said to them, "Where is your faith?" Filled with fear and amazement, they said to one another, "Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?"

The Parable of the Mustard SeedMML

God's kingdom is compared to the smallest seed that grows into a large tree.

31He put another parable before them: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.

32It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches."

1That same day Jesus left the house and sat down by the sea.

2Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the shore.

3And he told them many things in parables, saying: "Listen! A sower went out to sow.

4As he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

5Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once, because the soil was shallow,

6but when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered because it had no root.

7Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.

8But other seed fell on good soil and produced a crop—some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

9Whoever has ears, let him hear."

10The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"

11He answered, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

12For whoever has will be given more, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

13This is why I speak to them in parables: though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

14In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled: 'You will listen and listen, but never understand; you will look and look, but never perceive.'

15For this people's heart has grown calloused; they hear with difficulty, and they have shut their eyes—otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.

16But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

17Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see and did not see it, and to hear what you hear and did not hear it.

18You, then, listen to the parable of the sower.

19When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

20The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,

21but he has no root in himself and lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

22The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

23But the seed sown on good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and produces a hundredfold, sixtyfold, or thirtyfold."

2He taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:

3"Listen! A sower went out to sow.

4And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

5Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once, because the soil was shallow,

6but when the sun rose it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away.

7Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, so it produced no crop.

8And other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew, and produced a crop—thirty, sixty, even a hundred times what was sown."

9And he said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."

10When he was alone, those around him, along with the Twelve, asked him about the parables.

11He told them, "To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to those outside everything comes in parables,

12so that they may look and look, yet never see, and hear and hear, yet never understand; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven."

13Then he said to them, "Don't you understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of them?

14The sower sows the word.

15Some people are like the seed along the path, where the word is sown: as soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.

16Others are like the seed sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they receive it at once with joy,

17but they have no root in themselves and last only a little while. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they immediately fall away.

18Others are like the seed sown among thorns. These are the ones who hear the word,

19but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the craving for other things come in and choke the word, and it produces nothing.

4When a large crowd had gathered, with people streaming in to him from town after town, he spoke this parable:

5"A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some fell along the path, where it was trampled underfoot and the birds of the sky ate it up.

6Some fell on rock, and when it came up it withered, because it had no moisture.

7Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.

8And some fell into good soil, and it grew and produced a hundredfold." As he said this, he called out, "Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear!"

9His disciples asked him what this parable meant.

10He said, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest I speak in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

11This is what the parable means: The seed is the word of God.

12The ones along the path are those who hear; then the devil comes and takes the word away from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

13The ones on the rock are those who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root; they believe for a while, and in the time of testing they fall away.

14As for what fell among the thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and their fruit never ripens.

15But the seed in the good soil—these are the ones who hear the word with a noble and good heart, hold it fast, and bear fruit with patient endurance.

He also said to them, "Does anyone bring in a lamp to put it under a basket or under a bed? Doesn't he put it on a stand?
For nothing is hidden except to be revealed, and nothing is concealed except to be brought out into the open.
And he said to them, "Pay attention to what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and more besides.
For to the one who has, more will be given; and from the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away."
He also said, "The kingdom of God is like this: a man scatters seed on the ground.
Night and day he sleeps and rises, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.
All by itself the earth bears fruit: first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head.
And he said, "How shall we picture the kingdom of God? What parable shall we use for it?
yet once it is sown it comes up and becomes the largest of all the garden plants, with branches so big that the birds of the sky can nest in its shade."
With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as much as they were able to hear.
He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately he explained everything to his own disciples.
That day, when evening came, he said to them, "Let's cross over to the other side."
So they left the crowd behind and took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats went along with him.
