Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with this word: "May the gods do so to me, and more also, if by this time tomorrow I have not made your life like the life of one of them."
Elijah was afraid, and he got up and fled for his life. He came to Beersheba in Judah and left his servant there,[^1] [^1]: The Hebrew consonants can also be read "he saw," that is, he saw what had happened.
while he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it, and prayed that he might die. "Enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my fathers."
Then he lay down under the broom bush and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat."
He looked around, and there by his head was a loaf baked on hot stones and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again.
The angel of the LORD came back a second time, touched him, and said, "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you."
So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
There he came to the cave and spent the night there. And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
He answered, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. The Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and now they are seeking my life to take it away."
The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came the sound of a low whisper.
When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak, went out, and stood at the mouth of the cave. And a voice came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
He answered, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. The Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and now they are seeking my life to take it away."
The LORD said to him, "Go back the way you came, to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, anoint Hazael king over Aram.
Anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.
Whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will put to death; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will put to death.
Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel—every knee that has not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him."
So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah passed by him and threw his cloak over him.
Elisha left the oxen and ran after Elijah. "Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye," he said, "and then I will follow you." "Go back," Elijah replied. "What have I done to you?"
So he turned back from him, took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He cooked the meat using the plowing equipment for fuel, gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.
