Then Hannah prayed: "My heart exults in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in your salvation.
No one is holy like the LORD; there is none besides you, and no rock like our God.
Speak no more so proudly; let no arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by him every deed is weighed.
The bows of the mighty are broken, but the weak are armed with strength.
Those who were full now hire themselves out for bread, but the hungry go hungry no more. Even the barren woman has borne seven, but she who had many sons is left desolate.
The LORD brings death and gives life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he humbles and he exalts.
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, seating them among princes and giving them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's, and on them he has set the world.
Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered; he will thunder against them from heaven. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and lift high the horn of his anointed."
Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy remained to serve the LORD under Eli the priest.
Eli's sons were worthless men; they had no regard for the LORD.
This was their practice with the people: whenever anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat was boiling.
He would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot, and whatever the fork brought up the priest took for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh.
Even before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest meat to roast. He will not take boiled meat from you—only raw."
If the man said to him, "Let the fat be burned first, then take whatever you want," the servant would answer, "No, hand it over now; if you won't, I'll take it by force."
So the sin of these young men was very great in the LORD's sight, for they treated the offering of the LORD with contempt.
But Samuel served before the LORD, a boy wearing a linen ephod.
Each year his mother made him a little robe and brought it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, "May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one asked for and given to the LORD." Then they would return home.
And the LORD showed his care for Hannah: she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.
Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
So he said to them, "Why do you do such things? I hear about your evil deeds from all these people.
No, my sons; the report I hear is not good. You are leading the LORD's people into sin.
If one person sins against another, God may mediate for him; but if someone sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?" His sons, however, would not listen to their father, for it was the LORD's will to put them to death.
And the boy Samuel continued to grow, and he was pleasing both to the LORD and to the people.
A man of God came to Eli and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: Did I not reveal myself plainly to your father's house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh?
Out of all the tribes of Israel I chose your father to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear the ephod before me. And I gave your father's house all the offerings made by fire by the Israelites.
Why then do you trample on my sacrifice and my offering, which I commanded for my dwelling? You honor your sons above me, fattening yourselves on the choicest part of every offering my people Israel bring.
Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: I did indeed promise that your house and your father's house would minister before me forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be treated with contempt.
The days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father's house, and no one in your family will live to old age.
You will look on in distress at my dwelling. Though good will be done for Israel, never again will there be an old man in your house.
Every one of your line whom I do not cut off from my altar will be spared only to wear out your eyes with weeping and to grieve your heart, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life.
And this will be the sign to you: what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas—both of them will die on the same day.
Then I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do what is in my heart and mind. I will build him an enduring house, and he will walk before my anointed one all his days.
And everyone left in your house will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and will say, 'Please attach me to one of the priestly offices, so I may eat a morsel of bread.'"
