Concerning Moab. This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Woe to Nebo, for it is laid waste! Kiriathaim is disgraced and captured; the stronghold is disgraced and shattered.
Moab's glory is no more. In Heshbon they plotted her ruin: "Come, let us cut her off from being a nation." You too, Madmen, will be silenced; the sword will pursue you.
Listen! A cry from Horonaim: devastation and great destruction!
Moab is broken; her little ones have raised a cry.
Up the ascent of Luhith they go, weeping bitterly as they climb; on the descent to Horonaim anguished cries of destruction are heard.
Flee! Save your lives! Become like a shrub in the wilderness.
Because you trusted in your works and your treasures, you too will be captured, and Chemosh will go into exile together with his priests and officials.
The destroyer will come against every city, and no city will escape. The valley will perish and the plateau be devastated, as the LORD has said.
Give wings to Moab, for she must fly away. Her cities will become a desolation, with no one living in them.
Cursed is the one who does the LORD's work negligently, and cursed is the one who withholds his sword from blood.
Moab has been at ease from his youth, settled like wine on its dregs, never poured from vessel to vessel, never gone into exile. So his taste has remained unchanged, and his aroma has not changed.
Therefore the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will send him decanters who will tip him over; they will empty his vessels and smash his jars.
Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, the object of their trust.
How can you say, "We are warriors, men valiant in battle"?
Moab is laid waste; her cities are stormed, and her finest young men have gone down to the slaughter, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
Moab's disaster is near at hand; his calamity is rushing upon him.
Mourn for him, all you who live around him, all who know his name. Say, "How the mighty scepter is broken, the glorious staff!"
Come down from your glory and sit in thirst, you who are enthroned, daughter of Dibon, for the destroyer of Moab has come up against you; he has ruined your fortresses.
Stand by the road and watch, you who live in Aroer. Ask the man fleeing, the woman escaping: "What has happened?"
Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered. Wail and cry out! Announce it by the Arnon: Moab is laid waste!
Judgment has come upon the plateau country—upon Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath,
upon Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim,
upon Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul, and Beth-meon,
upon Kerioth and Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near.
Moab's horn is cut off, and his arm is broken, declares the LORD.
Make him drunk, for he exalted himself against the LORD. Let Moab wallow in his own vomit and become a laughingstock himself.
Was not Israel a laughingstock to you? Was he caught among thieves, that you shake your head whenever you speak of him?
Abandon the towns and live among the rocks, you inhabitants of Moab. Be like a dove that nests on the sides of a gaping gorge.
We have heard of Moab's pride—how very proud he is—of his loftiness, his pride, his arrogance, and the haughtiness of his heart.
I know his insolence, declares the LORD, but it comes to nothing; his boasts accomplish nothing.
Therefore I wail over Moab; for all Moab I cry out; I moan for the men of Kir-heres.
More than for Jazer I weep for you, O vine of Sibmah. Your branches spread across the sea; they reached as far as the sea of Jazer. The destroyer has fallen on your summer fruit and your grape harvest.
Joy and gladness are gone from the orchard land and from the land of Moab. I have stopped the wine flowing from the presses; no one treads them with shouting—the shouting is no shout of joy.
The cry from Heshbon reaches Elealeh and Jahaz; they raise their voice from Zoar as far as Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah, for even the waters of Nimrim have become desolate.
In Moab I will put an end, declares the LORD, to the one who offers sacrifice at the high place and burns incense to his gods.
Therefore my heart moans like a flute for Moab; my heart moans like a flute for the men of Kir-heres, for the wealth they gained has perished.
Every head is shaved and every beard cut off; every hand is slashed and every waist wrapped in sackcloth.
On all the rooftops of Moab and in her squares there is nothing but mourning, for I have shattered Moab like a jar no one wants, declares the LORD.
How shattered she is! How they wail! How Moab turns his back in shame! Moab has become a laughingstock and a horror to all around him.
For this is what the LORD says: Look, one swoops down like an eagle and spreads his wings over Moab.
The towns are captured and the strongholds seized. On that day the hearts of Moab's warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
Moab will be destroyed as a people, because he exalted himself against the LORD.
Terror, pit, and snare await you, inhabitant of Moab, declares the LORD.[^1] [^1]: The Hebrew words *pachad*, *pachat*, and *pach* form a striking sound-play that cannot be fully carried over into English.
Whoever flees from the terror will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare; for I will bring upon Moab the year of their punishment, declares the LORD.
In the shadow of Heshbon the fugitives stand helpless, for a fire has gone out from Heshbon, a flame from the midst of Sihon; it has consumed the forehead of Moab and the skulls of the noisy boasters.
Woe to you, Moab! The people of Chemosh are destroyed; your sons are taken into captivity and your daughters into exile.
Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the latter days, declares the LORD. Here ends the judgment on Moab.
