The Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah and said, "Isn't David hiding on the hill of Hachilah, facing the wasteland?"

So Saul set out and went down to the Wilderness of Ziph with three thousand picked men of Israel, to search for David in the Wilderness of Ziph.

Saul camped on the hill of Hachilah, which faces the wasteland, beside the road. David was staying in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul had come after him into the wilderness.

So David sent out scouts and learned that Saul had indeed come.

Then David set out and came to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the spot where Saul was lying, along with Abner son of Ner, the commander of his army. Saul was lying inside the camp's circle, with the troops camped around him.

David turned to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and asked, "Who will go down with me to Saul, into the camp?" Abishai said, "I will go down with you."

So David and Abishai came to the troops by night, and there was Saul, lying asleep inside the camp's circle, his spear stuck in the ground by his head, with Abner and the troops lying around him.

Abishai said to David, "Today God has handed your enemy over to you. Now let me pin him to the ground with the spear—one stroke; I won't need a second."

But David said to Abishai, "Don't destroy him! Who can lift a hand against the LORD's anointed and be innocent?"

And David said, "As surely as the LORD lives, the LORD himself will strike him down—either his day will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and be swept away.

The LORD forbid that I should lift my hand against the LORD's anointed. Now take the spear by his head and the water jug, and let's go."

So David took the spear and the water jug from beside Saul's head, and they left. No one saw, no one knew, no one woke up; they were all asleep, for a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen on them.

Then David crossed over to the other side and stood on top of the hill at a distance, with a wide gap between them.

David shouted to the troops and to Abner son of Ner, "Aren't you going to answer, Abner?" Abner replied, "Who are you, shouting to the king?"

David said to Abner, "Aren't you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why, then, didn't you keep watch over your lord the king? Someone came to destroy the king, your lord.

What you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, you all deserve to die, because you did not guard your lord, the LORD's anointed. Now look around—where are the king's spear and the water jug that were by his head?"

Saul recognized David's voice and said, "Is that your voice, my son David?" David answered, "It is my voice, my lord the king."

And he said, "Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done? What wrong am I guilty of?

Now let my lord the king listen to his servant's words: If the LORD has incited you against me, then let him accept an offering. But if it is men who have done it, may they be cursed before the LORD, for they have driven me out today from sharing in the LORD's inheritance, saying, 'Go, serve other gods.'

Now, do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to hunt a single flea, as one hunts a partridge in the mountains."

Then Saul said, "I have sinned. Come back, my son David. I will never harm you again, because my life was precious in your eyes today. I have acted like a fool and gone terribly wrong."

David answered, "Here is the king's spear. Let one of your young men come over and get it.

The LORD repays every man for his righteousness and faithfulness. The LORD handed you over to me today, but I would not lift my hand against the LORD's anointed.

Just as your life was precious in my eyes today, so may my life be precious in the LORD's eyes, and may he deliver me from every trouble."

Then Saul said to David, "Blessed are you, my son David. You will surely do great things and surely prevail." So David went on his way, and Saul returned home.

Abner, son of Ner, was Saul’s army commander and closely related to the king. As supreme commander, he was responsible for the king’s security, and David’s criticism of his guard duty (vv. 15–16) was a serious accusation that touched both his honor and military competence.

Places
