Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn out her seven pillars.
She has slaughtered her animals, mixed her wine, and set her table.
She has sent out her servant girls; she calls from the heights of the city:
"Whoever is simple, turn in here!" To those who lack sense she says,
"Come, eat my bread and drink the wine I have mixed.
Leave your foolish ways and live; walk in the way of understanding."
Correct a mocker and you earn abuse; rebuke a wicked man and you get hurt yourself.
Do not rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
Instruct a wise man, and he grows wiser still; teach a righteous man, and he gains more insight.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.
If you are wise, your wisdom rewards you; if you mock, you alone must bear it.
Folly is a loud woman, gullible and knowing nothing.
She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the heights of the city,
calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way:
"Whoever is simple, turn in here!" And to the one who lacks sense she says,
"Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is a delight."
But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.[^1] [^1]: Sheol: the realm of the dead in Hebrew thought.
