The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
For gaining wisdom and discipline, for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and integrity;
for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young.
Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning gain guidance—
for understanding a proverb and a riddle-saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
They are a graceful wreath for your head, a necklace to adorn your neck.
My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in.
If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for blood, let's ambush some innocent soul for no reason;
let's swallow them alive like the grave, whole like those who go down to the pit;
we'll find all kinds of costly wealth and fill our houses with plunder;
throw in your lot with us, and we'll all share one purse"—
my son, do not walk in the way with them; keep your foot from their path.
For their feet run to evil; they hurry to shed blood.
How useless to spread the net where every bird can see it!
Yet these men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own lives.
Such are the ways of all who are greedy for gain; it takes away the life of those who have it.
Wisdom calls aloud in the street; she raises her voice in the public squares.
At the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks her words:
"How long, you simple ones, will you love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
Turn at my reproof! Then I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.
But since you refused when I called and no one paid attention when I stretched out my hand,
since you ignored all my counsel and would have none of my correction,
I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when terror overtakes you—
when terror strikes you like a storm and your disaster sweeps in like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.
Then they will call to me, but I will not answer; they will look for me, but will not find me,
since they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD,
since they would have none of my counsel and despised all my correction.
So they will eat the fruit of their own way and have their fill of their own schemes.
For the waywardness of the simple kills them, and the complacency of fools destroys them;
but whoever listens to me will dwell in safety, secure, with no fear of harm."
