Huram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, masons, and carpenters to build him a palace.

So David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, for his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.

In Jerusalem David took more wives, and he fathered more sons and daughters.

These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,

Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,

Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all marched up to search him out. David heard of it and went out to face them.

The Philistines came and raided the Valley of Rephaim.

So David inquired of God, "Shall I attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?" The LORD answered him, "Attack. I will hand them over to you."

So they went up to Baal-perazim, and there David struck them down. David said, "God has broken through my enemies by my hand like a bursting flood." That is why they named the place Baal-perazim, which means "the lord of breakthroughs."

The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and at David's command they were burned in the fire.

Once again the Philistines raided the valley.

David inquired of God again, and God told him, "Do not go up after them. Circle around them and come at them in front of the balsam trees.

As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, go out to battle, for God has gone out ahead of you to strike down the Philistine army."

David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon all the way to Gezer.

So David's fame spread through every land, and the LORD put the dread of David on all the nations.

People

Hiram (Huram) of Tyre was king of the Phoenician city-state of Tyre. His sending of craftsmen and cedar trees to David (v. 1) testifies to diplomatic relations between Israel and Phoenicia. The cedars from Lebanon were sought-after building materials and represented royal status and wealth.

David’s sons born in Jerusalem are listed in verses 4–7. The list includes Nathan, who became an ancestor in one of Jesus’ lines (Luke 3:31), and Solomon, who would succeed David as king. The name Beel-ada (בְּעֶלְיָדָע, "Baal knows") is notable because it contains the divine name Baal. In 2 Samuel 5:16 he is called Eljada (אֶלְיָדָע, "God knows"), which may indicate later editing to remove the Baal element.

Places

The Valley of Rephaim (עֵמֶק רְפָאִים) lies southwest of Jerusalem and formed a natural invasion route toward the city. The name "Rephaim" refers to an ancient people group associated in the Bible with giants (cf. Genesis 15:20; Deuteronomy 2:11). The valley was strategically important, so it is not surprising that the Philistines chose this route to attack David.

Baal-Perazim (בַּעַל פְּרָצִים, "Lord of breakthroughs") was the site of David’s first victory over the Philistines. David named the place to commemorate how God broke through the enemy "as a flood breaks through" (v. 11). Place names marking military victories and divine intervention were common in ancient Israel.

From Gibeon to Gezer marks the extent of David’s pursuit of the Philistines. Gibeon was located about 9–10 kilometers northwest of Jerusalem, while Gezer was an important fortified city near the coast. This pursuit demonstrated a complete military victory that drove the Philistines back into their own territory.

Events and Customs

Seeking God before war (vv. 10, 14) was an established practice in ancient Israel. David asked God twice and received different strategic answers each time. This underscores the Chronicler’s theological point that military success depended on obedience to God, not merely military skill. Such divine consultation could occur through prophets or the Urim and Thummim.

Burning of enemy idols (v. 12) stands in contrast to the parallel account in 2 Samuel 5:21, where it says David and his men "took them away." The Chronicler changes this to say the images were burned, in keeping with the commandment of the law in Deuteronomy 7:5; 25. This shows the Chronicler’s desire to portray David as one who fully obeyed the Mosaic Law.

Key Terms

Bekaim (הַבְּכָאִים) in verses 14–15 refers to a type of tree, possibly balsam poplars or mulberry trees. The sound of "footsteps" in the treetops was to be the sign that God Himself was going before the army. This divine signal united natural elements with supernatural guidance—perhaps the sound of wind in the leaves as a sign of the advance of God’s invisible host.

Parats (פָּרַץ, "to break through") is used in verse 11 to describe God’s victory. The flood metaphor was powerful in the dry climate of the Middle East, where sudden floods could be devastating. The wordplay between the verb and the place name Baal-Perazim is typical of Hebrew naming traditions.
