Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said, "Look, we are your own flesh and blood.

Even in the past, while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them home. And the LORD your God said to you, 'You shall shepherd my people Israel, and you shall be ruler over my people Israel.'"

So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. Then they anointed David king over Israel, as the LORD had spoken through Samuel.

David and all Israel marched to Jerusalem, that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were living.

The people of Jebus said to David, "You will never get in here." But David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is, the City of David.

David had said, "Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall become chief and commander." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he became chief.

David took up residence in the stronghold; that is why it was called the City of David.

He built up the city all around, from the Millo to the surrounding wall, and Joab restored the rest of the city.

And David grew greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him.

These are the chiefs of David's mighty men, who together with all Israel gave his kingship strong support to make him king, as the LORD had promised concerning Israel.

This is the list of David's mighty men: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni, chief of the officers. He wielded his spear against three hundred men, killing them in a single encounter.

Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men.

He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. There was a plot of ground full of barley, and the troops fled before the Philistines.

But they took their stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck the Philistines down; and the LORD brought about a great victory.

Three of the thirty chiefs went down to David at the rock, to the cave of Adullam, while a Philistine army was camped in the Valley of Rephaim.

At that time David was in the stronghold, and a Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.

David was seized with longing and said, "If only someone would give me a drink of water from the well by the gate of Bethlehem!"

So the three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well by the gate of Bethlehem, and carried it back to David. But David refused to drink it; instead he poured it out to the LORD.

"God forbid that I should do such a thing!" he said. "Shall I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives? For they brought it at the risk of their lives." And he would not drink it. Such were the deeds of the three mighty men.

Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of the three. He wielded his spear against three hundred men and killed them, and he won a name alongside the three.

Of the second group of three he was the most honored, and he became their commander, though he never equaled the first three.

Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck down the two mightiest warriors of Moab, and on a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.

He also struck down an Egyptian, a man about seven and a half feet tall. The Egyptian had a spear like a weaver's beam in his hand, but Benaiah went against him with a club. He wrenched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and killed him with that very spear.

Such were the deeds of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too won a name alongside the three mighty men.

He was held in greater honor than any of the thirty, but he was not counted among the three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

The mighty warriors were: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,

Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,

Ira son of Ikkesh from Tekoa, Abiezer from Anathoth,

Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite,

Maharai the Netophathite, Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite,

Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah of the Benjaminites, Benaiah the Pirathonite,

Hurai from the ravines of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite,

Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite,

the sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan son of Shagee the Hararite,

Ahiam son of Sachar the Hararite, Eliphal son of Ur,

Hepher the Mekerathite, Ahijah the Pelonite,

Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai son of Ezbai,

Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar son of Hagri,

Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,

Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,

Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Ahlai,

Hebron was an ancient religious and political center in the hill country of Judah, about 30 km south of Jerusalem. Here David was first anointed king over Judah, and it was natural that the elders of the tribes gathered there to recognize him as king over all Israel. The city had deep historical roots going back to the patriarchs.

Jerusalem/Jebus was a Canaanite city-state inhabited by the Jebusites (vv. 4–5). Its location on a ridge between the tribal territories of Judah and Benjamin made it a strategically neutral choice as capital. "The fortress of Zion" (מְצֻדַת צִיּוֹן) refers to the fortified acropolis on the southeastern hill, which later became known as the "City of David."

Pas-Dammim (פַּס דַּמִּים, v. 13) was the site of an important battle against the Philistines, where Eleazar and David defended a field of barley. The name may mean "boundary of blood" and suggests earlier conflicts at that location.

The Cave of Adullam (v. 15) was a well-known refuge in the lowlands of Judah where David had previously hidden from Saul. The Valley of Rephaim, west of Jerusalem, was a fertile plain often the scene of conflicts with the Philistines.

Bethlehem (vv. 16–18) was David's hometown, and the well at the city gate was clearly known and dear to him. During the Philistine occupation, this well became a symbol of homesickness and lost childhood memories.

The Covenant at Hebron (v. 3) was a formal ceremony in which mutual commitment was established between the king and the people "before the Lord." Such covenant ceremonies typically included sacrifices and oaths, establishing legal and religious obligations for both parties. Anointing with oil symbolized God's choice and equipping with the Spirit.

The Water from the Well of Bethlehem (vv. 17–19) illustrates an important cultural practice: David poured out the water as a drink offering to the Lord because he regarded it as equal to men's blood—they had risked their lives to fetch it. The drink offering (נֵסֶךְ) was an established form of sacrifice in which liquid was poured out as a gift to God.
