Some time later David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, taking Gath and its surrounding villages out of Philistine hands.

He also defeated Moab, and the Moabites became David's subjects and paid him tribute.

David defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah, as far as Hamath, when Hadadezer marched out to establish his power along the Euphrates River.

David captured from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung all the chariot horses, but kept a hundred chariots for himself.

When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them.

He stationed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became his subjects and paid him tribute. So the LORD gave David victory wherever he went.

David took the gold shields carried by Hadadezer's officers and brought them to Jerusalem.

From Tibhath and Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a great quantity of bronze, which Solomon later used to make the bronze Sea, the pillars, and the bronze vessels.

When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer king of Zobah,

he sent his son Hadoram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold, silver, and bronze.

King David dedicated these to the LORD, along with the silver and gold he had carried off from all the nations—from Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and the Amalekites.

Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

David stationed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became his subjects. So the LORD gave David victory wherever he went.

David reigned over all Israel, governing his whole people with justice and righteousness.

Joab son of Zeruiah commanded the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder;

Zadok son of Ahitub and Abimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was secretary;

Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David's sons were the chief officials at the king's side.

Hadadezer, king of Zobah (Hebrew: הֲדַדְעֶזֶר), was the ruler over a significant Aramean kingdom northeast of Israel. The name means "Hadad is my helper" and refers to the Aramean storm god Hadad. Zobah was likely located in the Beqaa Valley in present-day Lebanon and controlled important trade routes. Hadadezer attempted to expand his influence toward the Euphrates (verse 3), which brought him into conflict with David.

Toi, king of Hamath (Hebrew: תֹּעוּ), sent his son Hadoram (Hebrew: הֲדוֹרָם) with gifts to David. Hamath was an important city-state on the Orontes River in Syria. Toi and Hadadezer were enemies, so David's victory served Hamath's interests. Diplomatic gifts of gold, silver, and bronze were standard practice in the ancient Near East for establishing alliances.

Abishai, son of Zeruiah (Hebrew: אַבְשַׁי בֶּן־צְרוּיָה), was David's nephew and one of his most trusted military commanders. He led the campaign against Edom in the Valley of Salt and was the brother of Joab, the commander-in-chief of the army.

This practice can be seen in light of the warning in Deuteronomy 17:16 that kings should not acquire many horses.

Tribute and vassalage: The expression "became David's servants and paid tribute" (נֹשְׂאֵי מִנְחָה) describes a formal vassal relationship common in the ancient Near East.
