That night the king could not sleep, so he ordered the book of records, the chronicles, to be brought and read aloud before him.

There it was found written how Mordecai had reported that Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the threshold, had plotted to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.

The king asked, "What honor or distinction has been given to Mordecai for this?" The king's attendants who served him answered, "Nothing has been done for him."

"Who is in the court?" the king asked. Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared for him.

The king's attendants said, "Haman is standing in the court." "Let him come in," said the king.

When Haman entered, the king asked him, "What should be done for the man whom the king wishes to honor?" Haman thought to himself, "Whom would the king wish to honor more than me?"

So Haman answered the king, "For the man whom the king wishes to honor,

let royal robes be brought that the king himself has worn, and a horse that the king himself has ridden, with a royal crown set on its head.

Let the robe and the horse be entrusted to one of the king's most noble officials, and let them clothe the man whom the king wishes to honor and lead him on horseback through the city square, proclaiming before him: 'So shall it be done for the man whom the king wishes to honor!'

"Hurry," the king said to Haman, "take the robes and the horse, just as you have said, and do this for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king's gate. Leave out nothing of all you have spoken."

So Haman took the robe and the horse, clothed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city square, proclaiming before him, "So shall it be done for the man whom the king wishes to honor!"

Then Mordecai returned to the king's gate, but Haman rushed home, mourning, with his head covered.

Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you cannot prevail against him; you will surely fall before him."

While they were still speaking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman off to the banquet Esther had prepared.

Royal Chronicles and Insomnia: The chapter opens with the king unable to sleep (נָדְדָה שְׁנַת הַמֶּלֶךְ, "the king’s sleep fled") and ordering that "the book of records containing the events of the days" (סֵפֶר הַזִּכְרֹנוֹת דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים) be read aloud. Persian kings kept detailed archives of all events in the empire, including services rendered by subjects. Herodotus and other Greek historians confirm this practice. Maintaining such chronicles was both administratively important and served as a basis for rewarding loyalty.

Public Honor: Haman’s suggestion regarding how the king should honor a man (verses 7–9) reflects authentic Persian court customs.
