When Mordecai learned all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the middle of the city, crying out loudly and bitterly.

He came only as far as the king's gate, for no one dressed in sackcloth was allowed to enter it.

In every single province where the king's command and decree arrived, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing, and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

When Esther's maids and eunuchs came and told her, the queen was deeply shaken. She sent clothes for Mordecai to wear in place of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them.

Then Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king's eunuchs assigned to attend her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai and find out what this was about and why.

So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the city square in front of the king's gate,

and Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, including the exact amount of silver Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury for the destruction of the Jews.

He also gave him a copy of the written decree issued in Susa for their annihilation, to show Esther and explain it to her, and to charge her to go to the king to plead with him and beg him for her people.

Hathach returned and reported Mordecai's words to Esther.

Then Esther told Hathach to take this message back to Mordecai:

"All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that for any man or woman who goes to the king in the inner court without being summoned, there is but one law: death — unless the king extends the golden scepter and spares that person's life. And I have not been summoned to the king for thirty days now."

When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai,

he sent back this reply: "Do not imagine that you alone of all the Jews will escape, because you are in the king's house.

For if you keep silent at a time like this, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. And who knows? Perhaps you have come to the throne for just such a time as this."

Then Esther sent this answer to Mordecai:

"Go, gather all the Jews in Susa and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast in the same way. Then I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish."

So Mordecai went away and did everything Esther had commanded him.

Mordecai’s reaction in verse 1 follows a pattern of public mourning that was standard throughout the ancient Near East. Tearing one’s clothes, putting on sackcloth (שַׂק, saq), and sprinkling ashes over oneself were three combined actions expressing deep grief or national crisis. Sackcloth was a coarse fabric, typically dark and made from goat hair; it was uncomfortable against the skin and visually striking. The "great and bitter cry" (זְעָקָה גְדֹלָה וּמָרָה) is an expression also used to describe Esau’s reaction in Genesis 27:34, indicating deep despair over an existential threat.

The Prohibition of Sackcloth at the Gate

Verse 2 notes that no one could enter the king’s gate dressed in sackcloth. This reflects Persian court culture, where proximity to the king was meant to be a zone free from sorrow and discomfort. Greek historians such as Herodotus and Xenophon describe how Persian kings were shielded from unpleasant impressions.
