Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined.
Iron is taken from the dust, and copper is smelted from stone.
Man puts an end to the darkness; he searches to the farthest limit for ore in gloom and deep shadow.
He sinks a shaft far from where anyone lives, in places forgotten by the foot of man; there the miners dangle and sway, far from human company.
As for the earth, out of it comes food, yet underneath it is turned up as by fire.
Its stones are the place of sapphires, and its dust holds gold.
No bird of prey knows that path; no falcon's eye has seen it.
The proud beasts have not trodden it; no lion has passed that way.
Man lays his hand on the flinty rock and overturns mountains at their roots.
He cuts channels through the rock, and his eye sees every precious thing.
He dams up the sources of the streams and brings hidden things to light.
But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
No one knows its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living.
The deep says, "It is not in me"; the sea says, "It is not with me."
It cannot be bought with gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver.
It cannot be valued against the gold of Ophir, against precious onyx or sapphire.
Neither gold nor crystal can equal it, nor can it be exchanged for vessels of fine gold.
Coral and quartz are not worth mentioning; the price of wisdom is beyond pearls.
The topaz of Cush cannot equal it, nor can it be valued against pure gold.
From where, then, does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding?
It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the sky.
Abaddon and Death say, "We have only heard a report of it with our ears."
God understands the way to it, and he knows its place.
For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.
When he gave the wind its weight and measured out the waters,
when he set a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderbolt,
then he saw wisdom and declared it; he established it and searched it out.
And he said to man, "Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding."
